Playground for practical listening exercises

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Agreed. I am not a fan of music laid out on a slab! But I note that you don't appear to have completely removed the slab, just repositioned it. I'd try it with the slab in a closet or other room. You never know.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Yeah, that's miles better. First thing I notice is some nice bass playing accompanying the song which didn't strike me at all in thd first clip.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
thank you all for giving feedback its really wonderful to have you as support It seems consistent that stoned support makes nothing better - slabs included
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I agree, best left for the patio.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
the only issue I now have is that I have the feeling that there is some forwardness or hissing somewhere and that is maybe what you Charlie heard when you said it somehow sounds synthetic (before I removed the slab).

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Fitted some spikes to the Lack legs as Defender suggested.
Defo better sound but is the music better too?
Normal: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dlzq8n2s7qu9h ... 9.mp4?dl=0
Spiked: https://www.dropbox.com/s/upeykxlv41acs ... 1.mp4?dl=0
Let the deck settle for a few hours between recordings. This defo makes a difference and is quite a bit better than the recording to made immediately afterwards.

Actually, they both sound good...although different. The spiked recording might have better detail, but the normal recording may be more musical. Tough call on which is actually better...Charlie1 wrote: ↑2021-06-21 19:23 Fitted some spikes to the Lack legs as Defender suggested.

Me too. I love some of the quirky phrasing in particular. I wonder how many hours it took to create. Some people think it's about the beatles but no one seems to know for sure. Crimson Dynamo being Ringo. The whole of side one of venus and mars works great together imo. That McCartney fella is quite talented 😀
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
leaning towards non spike protein

Thanks Gents!
I think you're all right. I was kinda hoping otherwise but the rhythm seems to go stiff.
I tried again this morning in case the deck settling was more significant but there was no major shift.
I have also tried Skeets, which seems better than just spikes, but will go back to normal I think.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I found these much closer, and I’m surprised by how much the skeets have improved things. But I agree, overall, without spikes/skeets is slightly more musical.Charlie1 wrote: ↑2021-06-22 09:46 Thanks Gents!

The spikes/skeets idea is worth persevering with though, it’s definitely got its merits. Different spikes? Different skeet type things? Different materials? Ball bearings? The list is endless!

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
When I introduced Skeets the settling seemed to take a week or so
Pete
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Got some James Brown on and been enjoying it so I will give the skeets a week to settle. Thanks guys.
Anyone understand what the LP12 likes about the Lack without spikes? I assume the table is then freer to vibrate along with the rest of the deck, or something like that. Are the spikes adding some instability do you think?

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I'm just intrigued by the fact that the LP12 likes to be decoupled from the floor. Perhaps allowing the legs to be free but changing the surface would help. clearly something heavy is no use, but perhaps something hard and light.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
With Skeets is a lot better, but not enough ... For me "Normal".Charlie1 wrote: ↑2021-06-22 09:46 Thanks Gents!

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
normal for me too
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Thanks folks.
Well, that's the end of that attempt. Not easy to find improvements.
Impatience got the better of me so I ditched the spikes. I thought perhaps the LP12 with standard feet likes the Lack to be able to move as freely as possible so I tried a felt pad stuck to the bottom of each leg on top of china plates with slippy baking paper between, then layers of card below the plates to level the deck. Very beckian I thought but it sounded bloody awful.
Then tried just the felt pads on layers of card as normal which was very very close to normal but still not quite as good. That gap may disappear by tomorrow though but certainly not found any improvement.
Not easy is it. I suppose I could shorten the legs, see if that makes any difference, although they wouldn't have the chipboard infill at the base of each leg.
It's annoying cos I know my decks can sound more accurate/etched, which would be welcome with these old speakers. The Sound Org wall shelf is best at that but I never get anything very musical out of it.
Someone told me today that Ivor once guessed that the Townsend rack (complete with Bicycle pump) might work well with the LP12. Anyone ever try it back in the day?
