RS232 Cables - Any differences?

Post by rowlandhills »

I've read of a few times when people have observed some audible differences with and without the RS232 cable connected between a DS and a Linn preamp. Has anyone experimented with different RS232 cables to see if they make any difference?

I have access to the original Linn cable, a couple of cheap looking cables which came from other things and a nice, solid looking, shielded cable from some Cisco kit. However, my system is not yet well enough setup to let me be confident of picking up any details.

As far as I remember the difference is not made by the RS232 cable itself but by the RS232 setting in the preamp, even if no RS232 cable is connected.

Fair enough. I've also just realised that my alternate cables are actually incorrectly wired anyway, as they're 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 not 1-4, 2-3, 3-2, 4-1. :(

Axel (sommerfee) is right, the setting of the RS-232 port affects the sound slightly. On KK, it should be on. Not sure about other products.

Unfortunately, I have also found the connection between products to affect the sound slightly. Usually, the fewer connections, the better. This is one reason why a system with few components is much easier to really optimise for best sound quality.
