Klimax Kontrol versions

Post by qweos »

Hi, I heard that Linn engineers modified (updated) some of the internal boards of the KK after 2001.

Anybody knows if there are different versions of the Klimax Kontrol, for instance, between 2001 models and 2004 models?

Thanks.

P.S. I'm sorry for my terrible English.

I cannot answer this particular question, but Linn usually modifies the internal boards of all products from time to time.

Thanks for your quick answer, sommerfee.

The really question is if there are sound differences between different models of KK.

Regards.

Hi qweos, I have listened to some KK's and they do differ slightly. I have not, however, any knowledge of a specific time or serial number after which things got clearly better.

If there is such a specific step up in performance, I simply haven't heard or inspected enough of them to find it. But in my opinion also the very early ones sound superb.

Does anybody use Nordost Pulsar Points, or a similar product under their Klimax Kontrol, regardless of production date or version?

Although we are a Nordost dealer I have never tried pulsar points. We aren't all that big on a lot of these tweaks. We used to carry the carbon fiber shelves, pucks and cones from Black Diamond Racing and a couple of the guys here liked them. I tried their recommended combo of the cones and pucks together on the KK, the CD12 and the Ikemi and preferred all three without them. While there were some more "detail" Hi-Fi artifacts with the cones the music sounded more tuneful and natural without them.

Nordost has just announced a much more expensive and vastly more complicated replacement for the pulsar points (called Sort Kones) so there will be no limit to your ability to spend money on their products should you choose to do so.

In addition to the various cones, have you tried any of the expensive after market power cords? I have heard completely different opinions regarding Nordost (and other brands) power cords on the Linn Klimax series of components. Based on other Lejonklou threads, many think the Linn stock cord sounds better.

Feeling nothing but contempt for most of the audio accessory companies out there, I just had to quote you on the above. It was so well put. :D

I do not, however, consider myself a part of the morbidly sceptical group of HiFi enthusiasts. Those who refuse to believe their ears. I've been informed by reliable sources that Nordost makes at least one really good product, but as with many other companies, there is no consistency in their range when it comes to musical performance.

Many audio accessory companies have found an easy way to make big money off their products :!: People that are new to the audio world can often spend more money on accessories than actual components.

At the store we have split opinions when it comes to Nordost vs. Linn cables. When it comes to power cables I have done comparisons and I prefer the better Linn power cables to Nordost Valhalla power cables. This despite the nearly 100 to 1 price difference.

I should also mention that many of the Nordost power cables won't fit in Klimax equipment due to the large WattGate IEC plugs. At one time Nordost refused to sell Valhallas with any other plug so I re-terminated them here for a couple of customers. Since this left me with a number of the WattGates lying around I tried one on a Linn power cable - it sounded worse than the Schurter plugs I had been using for the Valhallas which in turn sounded worse than the molded-on Volex connector of the stock Linn cable. So much for high-end IEC plugs!

It's always been hard for me to understand how a power cord can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. While there can be sonic differences between power cords, how in the world could the differences be worth so much money :?: I've seen people use a $3,000.00 power cord on a $2,000.00 integrated amplifier :!:
