Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Even later to the party, I found the comparison difficult and the difference small.
Have you tried what happens if you have no washer in between foot and speaker?
I think the difference in surface area makes a bigger impact than the material of the washer.

I haven't tried that since I first fitted the bases a few years ago. I'll check it before I test the bronze washers.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I was wondering about the difference in the washer surface area too. You definitely want to try the washer both ways, it can make a significant difference and the washers on Lejonklou equipment do have a proper orientation, even those between the rubber feet and the case on the full size gear.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
The base and its 3 sets of washers (between the limestone and cabinet, underneath the bolt heads, between the spike lock nuts and the limestone) along with the spikes themselves seem to be quite influential on the sound.
I've finally got a set up that I can reliably dismantle and reassemble without changing the sound. I'm torquing the base bolts, and hand tightening with pliers the lock nuts+ washers for the spikes.
I'll let it bed in for a week or so and then reverse the brass washers between base and cabinet.
My family have been sucked in to this fun and are also amazed and bemused by how much better music this fiddling makes.
This now sounds a better again than the set up I recorded as 'brass'.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I'm liking the sound of that quite a bit although I didn't compare it to anything. I'm not sure how it would work in this case but I think it might be best with one set of washers facing the other direction than the other set. In other words either the flat side or the non-flat side contacting the speaker plinth on both top and bottom. I could be wrong on this because one washer is going between the speaker plinth and the speaker body, but it still might work best this way. Anyway worth trying as long as you are working with those parts.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I wasn't patient enough to wait, so I've done some more tests.
Which do you prefer:

Brassic: https://photos.app.goo.gl/yXrFMtCXeUAgCxcAA

Hi Pete,
no washers is a no-go, but the other two sound so different, that it's hard to say.

I pick Brasso which seems to have the best flow of the 3.
Each clip is recorded a bit differently though so it was tricky to decide.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Yes apologies for the different recording quality. I don't know why they are so different, as I tried to keep everything the same on the phone.

With washers used I get caught up in the sound (Brasso, Brassic). With no washers used (Air) I get caught up in the music.springwood64 wrote: ↑2024-01-13 09:48 Thanks for the suggestions!

It’s that live feeling…………….
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I didn't like Air, by comparison to the other two.
Hard to be sure but think I liked Brassic a touch more than Brasso.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Sounds like you are covering the microphones when recording?
I lean towards Brasso.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Exactly what I was thinking, it's an error I have made in the past. You have to be careful how you hold the phone/tablet to make sure that you don't partially cover one of the microphones. Also when recording in landscape mode you should make sure that the bottom of the unit faces the same way on all the recordings.
I am also liking Brasso a bit more than Brassic. It is interesting how Air presents the sax more forward but something about that clip just feels wrong.

In comparison to the original (on Spotify?) it sounds somewhat muted, I prefer Brasso.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Thanks again everyone for listening and commenting.
Next time I do recordings I'll pay close attention to the location of the microphones on the phone.
In the room I prefer Brasso too.
That such small changes as reversing the washers makes an audible difference implies to me that my Espeks as a system are unstable, with tight coupling or interaction between the components.
I have them placed on skeets on carpet. While the skeets have compressed the carpet over time, and now have well defined recesses, the speakers still move. When I'm levelling them, if I shift my weight on the floor near the speakers, I disturb the level.
I wonder how much better these speakers could sound if any risk of instability was fully removed.
I don't know how to do that without significant irreversible changes to the living room floor. Since any change could also make things sound worse, I'm not tempted to try.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Both very enjoyable and for one hideous moment I thought I'd been sucked into enjoying a Steely Dan track, but Shazam reassured me that my prejudice can remain intact...
Track B for me
Pete
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
The immediate difference for me is that Track "A" is more in tune -musicians are more on the mark- than Track "B" is.
Rega NAIA, Aphelion II, Aura. Naim CB 32.5/HC, Naxo 3-6/HC, 3x250 into K20/DMS.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I find Track B (112) easier to follow but they both show off the strengths of a Lejonklou system very well.

I prefer Clip A.
Is this analog vs digital where Clip A is analog?

No… it’s internal wiring in a power distribution unitWhatsmynaim wrote: ↑2024-01-14 21:28 I prefer Clip A.

Same units, one wired with Solid core silverplated copper and the other with Linn K400
Both clips are Spotify - Kalla - SM 1.7 - TM 3.0 - Graham LS8/1F
Sofar 2 x A and 2 x B, mixed opinions

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Interesting idea using K400* for power distribution... I like the feel of B/112, but it seems a little vague - if I had to guess I'd say that's the Linn wiring. A/110 is more defined, but a little cold - guessing that's the solid core. Ideally I'd like a blend of the 2: the mood of B with the precision of A.Sopper wrote: ↑2024-01-14 21:39No… it’s internal wiring in a power distribution unitWhatsmynaim wrote: ↑2024-01-14 21:28 I prefer Clip A.
