Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Since 666F to 668F takes you from 352.2C to 353.3C you have three F temperatures in the range of two C so it wouldn't seem to work if they were rounding to the nearest temperature form some internal reference. Plus if it is just a readout you'd think it would be easy to change. So I'm betting that you are reprogramming the processor to actually work at the different temperature settings. Fun stuff! (OK, so I'm a certified nerd too!)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Looking at the technical data of some professional soldering stations I see terrible values for temperature stability and temperature accuracy so I am wondering under which circumstances Fredrik's very exact values can be reproduced.

It’s the same as with the SR CAL 36/4 torque tool, matthias: The manufacturer’s datasheet shows terrible data, but in practice and within the same tool, the accuracy is remarkably good.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I had only a look at some Weller stations up to 500 EUR, maybe you have much better ones :-)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
It’s the same for expensive units as for moderately priced ones. Intra-precision is much better than the datasheet suggests. Between units it differs, so you need to find where the peaks are on your specific station and pen. And you can’t change any parts without redoing those tests.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I have received an answer from an engineer about this. The stations I'm using are all internally working with 1/10 of a Celsius degree, so 352C, 667F and 353C result in three different tip temperatures. I have ordered a programming unit, so you can look forward to some clips once I've received it and experimented with switching between Celsius and Fahrenheit.ThomasOK wrote: ↑2023-11-16 22:23 Since 666F to 668F takes you from 352.2C to 353.3C you have three F temperatures in the range of two C so it wouldn't seem to work if they were rounding to the nearest temperature form some internal reference. Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Went back and forth a bunch of times on both 1A & 1B and there's something about the tune that bothers me a little on both, perhaps it's just the recording. But I feel the 1A is holding it all together just a touch better.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
It took me a while to find a preference on '1' - in the end I settled on B - but only because I knew I was looking for a difference.
For 2 it was pretty easy A: "I'm not sure I like this" vs B: "This is good!"

Prefer B too

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Another vote for B; Song 2 left me cold on A and got my head bopping on B.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Another vote for B, on song 2B it "feels" it is in sync,
on song 2A it is not in sync, it does not keep it together.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I enjoyed both 1A and 1B. My natural / automatic preference would be for A, but I listened more and began to appreciate B as well.
However, 2A suited me quite a bit more than 2B which was a struggle to follow and make sense of - by comparison.
Good bass from the little klangerdangadingdongs.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I think A is the best. Rythmwise B make a lot of sense but it is a bit more playing the same note over and over.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Just between the 2nd song-clips I went B initially but realized that was on tone and volume appearing to favor 2B … a few more listens has me changing my preference:
1 is close & tough to choose - both are enjoyable: A feels very slightly more together; B just a fraction more intimately expressive in the vocals. Maybe 1A sneaks ahead overall for me
With 2, once I got past the slight tone (body) & volume(?) change, I found myself favoring 2A as being a more interesting performance, especially as it dialed down a little of the edginess, without losing the music

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Definetly B in both cases. A is much too lets say "pushy", although both songs are rather annoying :-)

Song 1: I prefer B.
At first I thought the timing of the bassdrum on B was lagging behind but that's not the case. B flows better than A.
Song 2: Again I prefer B.
B is much more melodic and it's rocking!
A didn't do anything for me.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Just did a little more back and forth on the 1A & 1B, so many preferring the 1B, what am I missing?, they really are very close. But instead of finding more to like about the 1B clip I found more to critique about it, now I can also pinpoint it down to losing track of the instruments/notes/tune to a slightly greater degree on the 1B once the singing begins as well.

I prefer B on both tracks. Interesting!

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Anyone else had issues playing Fredrik's latest batch of clips? I've been trying to listen to them since he posted them and only now was able to get them to play. I've been avoiding reading others' responses until I could hear the clips myself, which kinda goes against my moderator duty to monitor every post, but I wanted to avoid any potential influence!
I prefer B on both songs, but that was like asking a parent to pick which of their children is their favorite.
Now I can go back and make sure y'all are behaving. ;-)

They won't play on my work laptop (Windows) but are fine via our Mac.
