Might be, but the lighting was good for this shot - shows off the plinth nicely (if you ignore the rest :)

On one of my visits to North America, I saw the old rosewood plinth that Thomas had renovated. He had removed the lacquer, polished and oiled it. It looked absolutely stunning! Add the fact that according to Thomas' comparisons between plinths, rosewood sounds the best of the original Linn plinths. And now Hermann confirms those findings.

Are you sure the overhang is correct, Karousel? For me it looks like the cartridge should be moved backwards to achieve the correct overhang.

I wanted to get into the game too. This Harban Movingui plinth shows bands of gold striping that move as you look at different angles. Then there are areas of dark wood which contrast well to the areas that are lighter in color. I traded up from a Tom graded B+ Harban Mayan Rosewood to this one and it does sound more musical.

Hi. It is possible but you have to bend the connectors on the wires between arm and cartridge. I have the same issue with my Benz LP cartridge but with a little modifications it is possible to get the cartridge in the correct position.
NB! Don't bend the connectors on cartridge or arm, but on the wires!

HBE has it right. You have to be careful as they are fragile but you can bend the cartridge tags at the end of where they plug onto the headshell pins. With some cartridges like the big Benz and Koetsus you bend all four towards the inside of the headshell as he shows. On some others, like the Adikt you bend two towards the inside and two towards the outside and the cartridge fits into the V formed by them. You do want to get it right the first time as bending them more than once, or maybe twice, will break them and you'll have to start with another set.

@Thomans, what oil did you use? And how did you polish it?

I sanded the plinth down by hand to remove all the existing lacquer. I think I started with I 600 grit (but it might have been 400) and then worked up to 1000 grit. It made for a very smooth and flat surface. If I were to do it again I would probably use an orbital sander but I didn't have one then. That is what Chris used and he told me he sometimes took them to 2000 grit but said I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless I was really good at sanding. I took his word for it. ;-)

I'll have to look when I get home and see what the name of the stuff is. It said it was an oil but further study showed that it was actually a wiping varnish (there aren't any consistent conventions about what to call wood finishes but you generally don't want to use actual oils). It is actually easy to apply as you don't need to have drying time between coats. You wipe on a coat and then using a clean cloth wipe it off, then you can repeat. I think I did around 7 coats but 5 is generally fine.

I did see your LP12, and it looks very nice indeed! I was mostly reaching out to those that may not have posted an LP12 picture yet, or those that have acquired an LP12 since this thread was posted.
