LP12SE System

Hi,
Having just joined,I have received good information. With the ultimate aim to go all Linn ,what other amps would perform okay with the
LP12SE . Would this cobination work : Kikkin pre amp for the LP12 , Sugden A21a integrated amplifier , with maybe a Sugden CD21SE Compact Disc Player,
speakers still to decide between Majik 109's,Kef , or ProAc

Hi Starman,

don't mix the Kikkin (which is a volume control) with an integrated amp (which is signal switching, volume control and power amp). I don't see how you can use them both in any sensible way.

Kikkin is a very high quality volume control for systems with one source only. If you use it with several sources, you need to change the connectors on the back of the Kikkin from one (e.g. LP12) to the other (e.g. CD).

Or maybe I misunderstood what you intended to do?

Hi,
What I was trying to find out ,is can the kikkin be used with an intergrated amp,or does it require a dedicated power amp.
The kikkin to control the LP and the volume on the Sugden to control the cd these were my thoughts.

You should only have one volume control in the system. Two of them can't be connected in any sensible way, and with an integrated amp you will have two.

The right way to build your systems is this: Sources - input switching - volume control - power amplifiers - speakers.

Okay, LP12 main and only music source at the moment
Input switching ? Is this only necessary if I wanted a cd player or DS .

Volume control ---- Kikkin
Power Amp not decided
Speakers not decided

Yes, input switching is only necessary if you intend to connect more sources (such as CD or DS).

Okay,
Now I understand.Having just read some other posts regarding this subject I think I will just stay with the kikkin, and if I do get a cd ,then I will just swap the cables.

If you only have one source I can't recommend the Kikkin enough. You really do need to spend a lot of extra money to beat it 8) :D

Another thing is that you need to be prepared to change the Akiva every two years or so, and it's very expensive (£1800?).

If that's all right, you are getting a hell of a turntable :D

Regarding the poweramp/speakers, it's really up to your budget. If you want an not-to-expensive alternative, I think that 2x2250 with active Katan or Ninka is very hard to beat at the price. Even cheaper and still very good is AV5125 (you need only one) with active Katan/Ninka.

On the other hand, using a MC is worth every penny :mrgreen:
A nice Lp12 deserve a MC in my opinion.
The difference Adikt --> Akiva is HUUGE. Please save the money elsewhere.

The system comes with Linto and Lingo ,with cables.
So I think it is good value

Just two years life for an Akiva :shock: I better start saving!

Seriously, this is going to depend on how many hours a week you'll be listening to it. I was rather hoping for around 4 years life from mine as I can only listen for about 10 hours per week now.

I think Azazello is right and its £1,200 to renew an Akiva. Last time I heard, they are £2k and you get £800 part ex on a used one.

That's a good offer from House of Linn I think and you can trust them to set it up correctly and not sell you a dud. RRP for that lot new must be around £10.5K.

My theory now is life is too short,so if you can afford to do it,then better to get enjoyment instead of always saying if only ,or I wish.

I have my old LP12 with Ittok and Lingo that I can offset against the new one.I would think it would be worth at least £800.00 (perhaps you will correct me if this to high)

I was going to invest in wine,as that is one of my other interests,but it would not be for drinking,purely for investment,so no enjoyment .

I would love to go aktive ,but we will wait and see

The complete LP12SE is great. You will most likely be amazed by what's on your records.

Just one thought: Why are House of Linn selling their LP12SE at a reduced price? To replace it with a new SE - or with something else? If there's just one retailer who knows when Linn are about to release something new, it's got be Brian Morris (because he used work there and knows everyone).

I would think that they would have a new one coming in.But I will ask the question when I go.
It was Brian that I spoke to. I got my LIngo,Karik,Numerik,Kairn and LK280 from Steve Carrol ,who then went to work for Linn and became good friends with Brian.

The thing about Adikt is that I don't have to worry so much :mrgreen:, if it starts to sound bad, I replace it. Usually after 18 or so months, but since I don't use a MC, I can play a lot of music :D
