Question about 4100, 6100 and 4200 power amps

Post by Charlie1 »

I am led to believe that the 4200 is not just more powerful than a 4100, but better quality too. I currently have a 6100 driving Ninka's aktiv. How does my 6100 slot in compared with the 4100 and 4200 in the context of driving Ninka's? Does it bridge the gap between the two or is it much closer in performance to the 4100. I'd be purchasing a 4200 used, so can't demo it.

Unfortunately, Upgrading the Majik Kontrol to a KK is not within budget.

What is it you like to adress with the change?
Yes, apart being more powerful/dynamic, the 200w chakra is a much better amp.

Without comparing it's difficult to say if the 6100 active is closer to the (less good) 4100 active than the 4200 (better) - but why not spend the money on the source/pre?

There is no question the x200 amps are musically better than the x100 series. It is definitely not just a matter of power. Although I have not done the comparison myself, I believe that Ninkas Aktiv with a 4200 would likely outperform Ninkas Aktiv with a 6100. Then you could add a 2200 later to further improve it.

I do have to agree with the source first comment. Possibly a used Exotik or Akurate Kontrol if you can't make it up to the KK. Although a KK might be showing up on the used market in a few months.

Thanks ML and ThomasOK for your feedback. I think I will leave the power amp for now and re-focus on the pre-amp, but I'm determined to go straight to a KK as I know anything else is just a stepping stone. Besides, I think my LP12SE deserves one (nothing to do with me of course!) They are just so expensive even second hand :(

Also, I should really make the effort to hear what these active ATCs are like before upgrading my Linn power amp / speakers.
