Re: 1973 lp12 for sale
It's not an authentic 1973 LP12. It's been Valhalla'd (possibly around '82-83 - it's hard to tell from the photographs) and the mains lead has been replaced with one with a captive 13A plug.
Re: 1973 lp12 for sale
I thought the first LP12s didn't have any plinth either.

Are you sure you mean the Valhalla power supply upgrade, because I can't find any motor control circuit board in the pictures?Spannko wrote:It's not an authentic 1973 LP12. Yes, well done mats. I meant to say Nirvana'd!
It looks like the bearing housing has been changed too. Id say that it was probably done at the same time as the Nirvana upgrade.

I bought my lp12 in the late 70's and James Kerr had stopped selling LP12s years before that so at most mid 70's

I'm not sure what you're saying Lego.Lego wrote:I bought my lp12 in the late 70's and James Kerr had stopped selling LP12s years before that so at most mid 70's
Are you saying that it's an untouched mid seventies LP12?

Which serial number is this?
The earliest I serviced was number 008. It had a home built plinth, there was none from Linn at the time. Customer wanted to upgrade it to current spec and I said perhaps not a great idea as there won't be a single piece left.

So in the beginning, Linn sold just the inner bearing/platter?lejonklou wrote:Which serial number is this?

When did Linn start selling a complete turntable? Year&Serialnumber

That appeared on eBay about 3 years ago. I don't know what it sold for in the end but was at £500 at one point.lejonklou wrote:The earliest I serviced was number 008. That unit has the basics of a very early unit but it definitely has had a number of minor upgrades. The five main bolts have all been changed to the newer black ones. The springs, grommets, washers and nuts all have been upgraded as well. As already mentioned there is a new AC cable. I believe the bearing housing is likely the original, as well as the platters, but it has had black oil put in. The motor, electronics, power switch, subchassis and armboard all appear appropriate for the time although one of the armboard screws has been replaced with a different type - maybe the original was stripped? Dust cover, top plate and plinth appear likely to be original as well but a Trampolin was mounted to it at one time.
Overall a pretty nice original unit with sensible parts replacement. But certainly not "in fabulous, un-altered original condition".
In answer to the question from Music Lover, as far as I know Linn never just sold the bearing and platter assembly. In the early years they sold the entire unit - bearing, platters, subchassis, top plate, motor, electronics and suspension components - but minus the plinth and dustcover. Even after those pieces were available you could order the unit without for mounting in a console or plinth of your choice. Somewhere I probably still have a piece of early lit with a photo of the plinth-less LP12. If I can dig it up sometime I'll post it up here.

Re: 1973 lp12 for sale
The main bearing looks like an original from underneath, but it looks like a black liner to me, rather than a white one covered with black oil. I've got a feeling that the very first liners were black though: is this true, or did I dream it?
