When was your first ever tune dem moment !?

Post by Lego »

OK I'll start the ball rolling. It was late 70s I bought rega 3 NAD 3020 mission 700s and after my Pye 1602 music cemtre this sounded amazing.
Looking at the distribution block I decided to plug amp and turntable straight into the wall sockets .Wow, amazing bass and treble with real drama and everything sounding tight, more hifi ,as if I'd upgraded to a more powerful amp except at the same time it sounded unreal as if I was just listening to a collection of notes rather than a tune. Reinstated the block and it was now 'much more like it',didn't understand why and probably still don't.

That was good going Lego. I had to look up the Pye btw - how did you come by that?

I grew up listening to tape and radio through an Akai system which I later inherited. This system must have done something right cos when I connected it to my first purchase, a Marantz CD player, it just didn't do it for me. This was followed by 3-4 years of fruitless upgrades before I finally heard an LP12 and instantly knew it was what I'd been searching for, although I certainly didn't know what tune dem was in itself.

Lol...I thought I was just making that model number up I knew it was a Pye ,obviously etched on my brain.
It was Saturday job while at school 2.50 an hour in an antique/junk shop took me 2 years to save up for it..hmm Lp12 compare to CD player not sure that's a tune dem moment Charlie :0) ...plastic turntables were beating CD players in those days

But I wasn't listening to any turntables, plastic or otherwise. All my friends were into CD as well. It never even occurred to me that CD was the problem or that vinyl could possibly be better. I was completely brainwashed and unquestioning of CD.

You're right though - your example is better :)

If I shall point out a single event it was when I replaced my Sony receiver and Sony (plastic?) turntable with Linn Intek/Linn Basik turntable and HelixII speakers. It really changed my listening habbits.

The problem with my "moment" is that it is not a moment but a "long and winding road" starting with a Sony tape-deck streching until now with my Sondek. I cannot narrow it down.

Linn Intek is a great amp I've still got one, hopefully getting it back with kans from a friend next week..not wanting to sound pedantic guys but these examples just sound like obvious upgrades that 99% of population would hear.I was referring to tune only differences eg Beck splitting the k400 expecting an improvement only to realise tune dem score is actually lower.I actually find that reassuring as it was philbo who gave me that tip at the Linn factory, and seeing I'm not a big fan of his speakers I decided not to follow that suggestion.

Probably when Anthony first set-up my system and tuned the speakers into position. I recall one of the tracks he used was the opening of Telegraph Road. By the time he'd finished it sounded really special and haunting whereas initially it was just nice hi-fi. I didn't know it was tune dem at that time and it was a while before I started tweaking myself, mostly with the help of this forum (and Tony on the phone). When I did start using tunedem I think it was to retune the speakers again after shifting the room around. Any better Leo? :)

..much more like it Charlie, music to my ears ;0)..I also love the accidental upgrades. When I first received my lp12 I just put it on the wall shelf the rega was on ..feeling nervous about its stability I decided to replace the screws on the shelf and plonked lp12 on a table ..half way through wishing I hadn't bothered I took a break and put on a record of course expecting it to sound terrible as the table was wobily not even level ...whoah!!!..come to think of it that was probably my first tune dem moment ..i find a tune dem improvement is ' in your face ' huge if you struggle to hear an improvement it's probably not worth it

Nice story. So did you leave it on the table or buy something new for the LP12 to sit on?

First tune dem moment? September 1984 during my first visit ti the local Linn dealer. Setup was a Rega Planar 3, Linn Basik cartridge, Creek CAS4040 integrated amplifier and Wharfedale Diamonds Mk1. Later in the afternoon I was demoed an LP12, Ittok LVII tonearm, Basik cartridge, Naim NAIT 1 and Linn Kans. Cartridge was later swapped to a Linn Trak and Linn Asak using Naim's MC preamplifier.

Got hooked on tune-dem and have never looked back!!!
