Regarding minimum size of listening room

Post by Mats »

Hi,

I would like to throw out a question out there and hope for some sort of feedback. I currently have a (more or less) dedicated listening room in our flat. The room is just below 20 square meters (around 215 square feet) and works just fine for my kit which currently consists of 109s along with my trusty old LK boxes. My dilemma is that for certain reasons I will probably have to relinquish this room in favor of my daughter. This unfortunate but necessary switch would leave me no choice but to either move my gear to the living room or to the tiny room which my daughter is vacating. The room in question is (ball park figure) about 10 square meters (about 105 square feet).

Now to my question, does anyone have any experience with a listening room that size? Is it even feasible to attempt to set up in a room that tiny?

I would very much appreciate any feedback or any experiences on the matter as I don’t particularly look forward to lugging my gear around anymore than necessary. I realize all rooms are unique but if it’s a probable “no go” based on size alone it would save me a lot of unnecessary effort. On the other hand if it´s possible to make it work it would be my preferred option by far.

I´m posting on this forum as I know my LK/Kollector pair are eventually going to go belly up and as Linn seem set on discontinuing the line of analogue preamps I believe Lejouklou would be the obvious replacement, particularly as my local supplier just recently turned distributer, plus the fact that I wouldn’t mind supporting a local (Uppsala) producer if the product is competitive.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Best regards

I have heard amazing small rooms, my own with 350s being 130sq feet, and bad large rooms.

I consider the ratios of H L W, furnishings and building materials make bigger differences.

A square room whether large or small is usually the most awkward.

Right, thanks for the replies. I'll cross my fingers and hope the room works out. I'm determined to give the small/tiny room a fair shot. Now I just need to muster up the energy to switch all the furniture, I'd be lying if I claimed to be looking forward to it.

When I first got a tundra I had just moved house and only had a temporary attic room around 2.5 x 2.5m.
I had come from a terrible sounding room 6x5 with another room off with four windows and a pair of French doors. That had been a nightmare to get a decent sound but I'd tried my best.
So that tri amped lk system with ninkas in a large room made way for the tundra in a tiny room and it was much better. It was very intimate and personal. I preferred the sound in that box to the sound in the big room by a large margin. That didn't have as much to do with changing amps but to going to a much less live sounding room.
I'd say go for it, you won't know until you try it.
