Linn DS streamers

Post by Sloop John B »

I've a few questions about Linn DS coming from a Naim background.

Form the point of view of hierarchy would I be right in thinking?
ADS/1
KRDS
KDS/1

How fussy are the streamers about Ethernet cables and quality. Naim would have me believe that Ethernet over mains is a no go, introduces too much RF or some such. Are Linn streamers immune or more resilient to this?

There are many posts on Naim fora about the benefits of different Ethernet cables, even up to chord Sarum TA. Again are Linn streamers more immune to the influence of whatever these cables bring or don't bring?

What sort of connection is it between streamer and Amp? DIN or RCA?

Is there anything else I should know before I dip my toes in the Linn pond?

Thanks

Hi and welcome! I moved from Naim to Linn without a regret.

Yes - correct (with the best at the bottom in your list)

I have had no issues at all using homeplugs - it's a digital signal after all - so all or nothing. No RF concerns.

I personally don't think ethernet cables make a jot of difference.

The streamers you have listed have both options. I used balanced from my Renew and KDS/1.

Not really - just got for it. The Linn forum on the Linn website is another good resource.

Thanks

Did you use Tune Method to evaluate the Ethernet cables klimaxer? I've found small improvements can be easily missed otherwise, especially if the benefits are more musical in nature (rather than clearer sound quality.)

I got the impression that the individually improvements gained in networking and storage are small, but add up to something significant and worth the effort.

Linn does not have DIN, only rca and XLR.

+1

And there are many details to improve, so the combined improvement can be very significant. Especially in musicality, but also in sound.

The main reason why people don't hear a difference is in my experience that their systems are so poorly installed. It then becomes difficult to perceive small changes. The better the system becomes, the easier it gets to notice even miniscule differences.

The overall performance of a system is the sum of many small details.

My mistake on the DIN - I was thinking XLR. Sorry.

The Klimax and Akurate DS/1 have both options.

As for the networking stuff - my system (KDS/KK/KCT/242) is very well installed and I can't hear a jot of difference. Might just be me - but I have swapped NAS / cables / homeplugs and can't tell any difference at all.

All IMHO.
