LP12 out of tune

Post by haraldur »

Hi All!
The purpose of this thread i do not know myself but perhaps it just a "feelgood" thread about our hobby. Recently i bought myself a KDS board and started fiddling around the DIY route. I already had a Sneakyn DS that i used as source out tool for vinyl worth buying. I am living in our summer house while my wife studying as a nurse at medical school and to keep the electricricy cost down we use our fire place as our primary source to keep us warm. My Sondek LP12 recently had a makeover by Erik at this forum,a skilled and enthusiastic Linnie. However over time the Sneaky DS has more and more started to outperform the Sondek more and more. Moving over to KDS does ofcourse not make things better..

I do believe this has to with humidity and our Swedish winter combined with keeping ourselves warm with our fireplace...

Now,i feel that it isnt right to use my friend as my personal mechanic and Fredrik Lejonklou lives about 1000 kilometres away so sending the deck every time it gets out of tune feels like no option. I would like to be able to keep my deck in best condition myself(and perhaps i might me fun as well?) i have a cheap copy of the Kradle and just ordered a Cal 36/4 tourque wrench. Just to learn on i bougt myself a cheap LP12 with valhalla and Ittok/K18 to practise on.

To make this thread even more oftopic i include a Linn LK1 as i have no RIAA except the linto. It has lot of mileage on it and lives its own life. During its best moment it is really good,i would say. Sadly it barks after a while and makes crackling noices and then freeze. Tonight after some wine i took it apart and removede the capacitors. About half of the population suffered from high ESR and were out of specs. I feel i have to bring such a nice piece to life again!

My humble question is about input where to start retourque the deck without to ruin my friends excellent work. It feels rude to ask for tourque values in different points so i won't even ask. My question is if there is points to look in especially who is tending to get out of tune?

The reason why we did the initially "surgery" was to fit a Troika and the Mowingui plinth. Perhaps the plinth has dryed a bit since then and some screws are needing to be tightening?

The sympthoma is like the deck need a new cartridge. Really tired and seams to track bad. In some tracks i almost can hear the information on the next revolution information. The needle is cleaned properly every record side with green paper and the putty. The Troika has a maximum 100 hours since rebuild at ESCo and i am a very careful general.

I am thankful for all input. And as i said,i'm not lurking for tourques, just imput where to start looking..

The deck is a Cikus trampolin II Ekos II machine with Lingo and ESCo troika and Linto..

Best Regards:
//Niclas

Hi Niclas
I am by no means the greatest expert who reads this forum.
But one immediate observation and piece of advice.
I would not play any more cherished records until you have had your "new" cartridge examined under a microscope.
It could be damaged, twisted, chipped, misaligned - all manner of things which could result in the symptoms you are describing.

To me it sounds as if something is seriously wrong - not just a matter of tweaking.

Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

IMHO, if an owner must DIY their LP12 (not recommended), then they would do well to first invest some hours at Linn's LP12 forum, reading all the related posts by "Cymbiosis" and "What You See and Hear."

There are lots of torque values scattered through old topics if you search through Google.

But they are no use as final figures in my experience (This is also what Fredrik and Thomas always told me too), so just use them as a starting off point, knowing that a sweet spot should be close by.
