Plinth warp

Post by heve »

Hi,everybody!

My LP12 plinth is warped.....or is it really? It's right at the linn specification for maximum allowable warp(fully loaded table without feet on a flat surface, high corner no more than 1,5 mm above surface) The high corner is at front right,in my case. With feet on,there's no tendency to rocking. It's been just the same for the 6-7 years I've owned it,so at least it seems to be stable.
My big problem is that I have no other LP12 to compare with(and 500 kilometers to the nearest dealer),so my first question is:Will a warp of this magnitude mean a significant loss in performance?
Linn advises that if the warp is more than 1,5 mm,the plinth should be replaced,OR trampolin installed. My next question is: In such a scenario,is the trampolin a 100% fix,or will it still perform worse than a perfectly flat plinth+trampolin? And,will warped plinth+tramp perform better or worse than a flat plinth without trampolin?

So I guess my final question is:Should I get a trampolin or should I get a plinth,or should I just forget about it,and get a secondhand Lingo to replace my Valhalla instead?

Note that funds are sufficiently limited that there's no need to mention custom plinths or SE upgrades....

Hi heve and welcome here!

Apologies for the late reply, but I'm unsure of how to answer your question. A warped plinth can of course cause troubles, like how tightly the top plate fits around all corners. I have seen warped plinths that turned out to be impossible to set up properly. The problem is that I don't know how many mm:s they were warped or where the limit goes for concern. I have never measured warp, just worked with it practically.

I suspect it would be easy to tell in real life, when fitting a top plate to it.

In any case, I think a Trampolin 2 is a nice and not too expensive upgrade from the rubber feet in the corners.

Thanks for your answer,Lejonklou! My top plate is a tight fit all the way along the plinth, and there is no rattling or ringing no matter where it's tapped.(Top plate to plinth bolts torqued to a little below 0.8nm) I honestly doubt that the top plate could be a much better fit. Also, setting up the table to bounce well is not particularily difficult, provided I don't measure levelness on the right-hand side of the plinth. So, I could be worrying about a non-existent problem,I guess. I should maybe have stated in my first post that it sounds sweet and musical, and that I never worry about it when actually listening to records.I guess that must mean something....

It sounds much less alarming now, heve. That the top plate fits well is really important.

If the LP12 isn't standing perfectly stable on all four feet, I'd get a Trampolin 2.
If it does, I'd get one anyway. :)
