Re: Best Sondek/turntable picture.
I realized the other day that I had never followed up on the wiping varnish I used. It is Daly's Profin Satin. As mentioned, this is what Chris Harban used on the vast majority of his plinths. Here is their website:ThomasOK wrote: ↑2020-12-16 20:28I sanded the plinth down by hand to remove all the existing lacquer. I think I started with I 600 grit (but it might have been 400) and then worked up to 1000 grit. It made for a very smooth and flat surface. If I were to do it again I would probably use an orbital sander but I didn't have one then. That is what Chris used and he told me he sometimes took them to 2000 grit but said I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless I was really good at sanding. I took his word for it. ;-)Hermann wrote: ↑2020-12-12 10:13That is a very good idea Fredrik. I think I will do the same with my second Rosewood plinth.lejonklou wrote: ↑2020-12-07 18:19 [...]
On one of my visits to North America, I saw the old rosewood plinth that Thomas had renovated. He had removed the lacquer, polished and oiled it. It looked absolutely stunning! Add the fact that according to Thomas' comparisons between plinths, rosewood sounds the best of the original Linn plinths. And now Hermann confirms those findings.

@Thomans, what oil did you use? And how did you polish it?
I'll have to look when I get home and see what the name of the stuff is. It said it was an oil but further study showed that it was actually a wiping varnish (there aren't any consistent conventions about what to call wood finishes but you generally don't want to use actual oils). It is actually easy to apply as you don't need to have drying time between coats. You wipe on a coat and then using a clean cloth wipe it off, then you can repeat. I think I did around 7 coats but 5 is generally fine.

It is available in satin or gloss versions. The interesting thing is that when you stir it up you stir up the little particles that give it the satin finish. So if you don't stir it much you get a more glossy finish out of the same can.

Several nice LP12 photos. We seem to be running basic black lately. Maybe it's Black Friday?

Re: Best Sondek/turntable picture.
Can't see much of the actual deck, since the album cover is covering most of the turntable.

Is that a Linn Klyde cartridge? I owned two before going to the Akiva cartridge.

Re: Best Sondek/turntable picture.
I never owned an Asaka or Troika, but have heard them on other LP12's. Unfortunately, they weren't available when I upgraded from the Klyde.John wrote: ↑2021-12-04 03:48Yes it is, I also rotate a Troika and Asaka.Tony Tune-age wrote: ↑2021-12-03 22:56 Is that a Linn Klyde cartridge? Re: Best Sondek/turntable picture.
Linn began a refurbishment program a few years after purchasing my Klyde. I purchased a cantilever-less Troika for cheap and sent it off to Linn for rebuild. You basically got an entire new motor assembly and to me were like a brand new cartridge.Tony Tune-age wrote: ↑2021-12-04 15:53I never owned an Asaka or Troika, but have heard them on other LP12's. I still have the same Troika and have had it re-tipped a few times by Expert Stylus and totally rebuilt by Goldring who did the original refurbishment program for Linn.
