Hi Sopper, thanks for the clips. Out of interest, what are the versions of upmpdcli between the 2 setups? Also, what are the hardware setups between the 2 - same hardware booted to each instance, in turn, or 2 separate boxes?

Volumio 2.513
MPD 0.20.23
Upmpdcli 1.3.8

Debian setup:
Debian 9 Stretch
MPD 0.21.3
Upmpdcli 1.3.6

Both setups:
Hakai per spec
Booted with 2 different Intel 320 ssd; 1 with Volumio and 1 with Debian 9 stretch

Thanks Sopper - good to know. I enjoyed the clips, and really need to phone the company to find out where my Nano160 is so that I can join in the fun. Will be interested to find out the result of the clips - which is which.
Any particular reason why they are not both on upmpdcli 1.3.8? (I know, I'm being picky/pedantic - sorry :)

Didn’t bother to update upmpdcli yet, since the update was mainly aimed at the Jessie ssl bug that prevented us to log into Qobuz with Kazoo

I prefer clip 1 on both. Clip 2 sounds more Hi-Fi, clip 1 sounds more musical. On the Dead Can Dance, when the high bell like sounds came in on clip 2 my immediate thought was "Did those really sound that irritating on the clip 1?" I went back to clip 1 and the answer was no, they were quite acceptable there.

I am listening this time with a pair of HIFIMAN planar dynamic headphones off the iMac so they may have made this kind of thing more obvious. I am using them just because I was testing them out for a reported defect so this is not a recommendation, just an observation.

Unanimous voted for the first clip being more tuneful.

The first clip was recorded from HAKAI running Debian 9 Stretch, mpd 0.21.3 and upmpdcli 1.3.6.
This Debian try out was a full Debian version, with desktop and tons of software I don’t use/need.

So I’ll start with the assumption that running the latest mpd and/or lib-dependencies have a big impact on musical performance.

The difference in room is even bigger; I don’t want to use Volumio anymore.

I'll bite even harder; I don't hear any difference.

However, thank you for posting as you have captured a song with a super-long time between intervals. I have never had to compare hi-fi using tune-dem with such a long interval between intervals. It really got me thinking about evaluating hi-fi in a tune-dem fashion. I love tune-dem evaluation as it really gets to the crux of the biscuit; which is better, A to B to C, or X to Y to Z? Meaning A and X are "E-flat", B and Y are "A", C and Z are "G". Which is more accurate?

In your recordings the comparisons are null; which required a redux.

The other reason I'm posting here is the first interval in your song immediately reminded me of a Thelonius Monk tune. I'm not sure which one. It got me on a Monk frenzy listening to many songs. For that alone, I thank you.

Thelonius Monk should be heralded among the greatest of composers/pianists/soloists.

I can only hear very small changes to the sound of the clips (if any). They all three have a great flow and are enjoyable to listen to. No major turnoffs as far as I can hear. Well done!

A is the Volumio based HAKAI (with upgraded MPD and Upmpdcli.)
B is the same as A but after killing the Volumio processes
C is the same as B but after also killing the graphics "kiosk" processes, including X11 etc since it would require a screen to be attached to HAKAI anyway.

In my ears, C is best. Surprisingly, the difference is larger between A and B than between B and C.

(The differences were actually larger before I messed up HAKAI a bit while upgrading MPD (long story)).

I still think there's something about B... Interesting since I felt similar about my Hakai with LXDE vs rebuilt as headless, but thought I was imagining it as the reimage took quite a while.

for me it made the difference how I could follow the womans voices in the 50-60seconds region where it got complex and it was easiest on track C (first 3 tracks)

Sure: A feels a little uncommunicative, like they're a bit shy & reserved. C is clear but feels a little exaggerated like they're trying a bit too hard. B just feels like it has a better balance - I don't hear it as strain so much as emotion, & better togetherness. That's just how the clips sound to me, listening here, but it could well be different in room.
