Re: Beck and his black boxes.
Oh, I get it. I used the word production! To put it more precisely I love Amarok as a piece of music. I do understand if others do not. It is a thing of it’s own in the Oldfield collection.
Yes, it is a remaster of the original Amarok that I have just collected. I have the original on vinyl.
Elvis Costello is my guide to how close I can get Hdcd to something more human sounding.
But whatever the sound I do enjoy the music. :-)

That's very unusual music but I enjoyed it. Don't have any Oldfield so need to check it out.
I struggled a bit with the costello track but that could just be the production.

I know - just never appealed to me for some reason
Just looking at his collection and I do have Ommadawn

Re: Beck and his black boxes.
I love Ommadawn. Some very interesting recordings on youtube regarding his third album.
As others have mentioned digital (when liftet above a certain musical level) becomes very attractive in many ways.
I for one will continue my cd adventure. :-)

Re: Beck and his black boxes.
First off, beck, very nice Nordic jazz. I quite enjoyed that.
I actually was referring to the digital effects so obviously part of the Mike Oldfield music clip you posted, which I'm not sure I got on all that well with.
I love almost all of Ommadawn. However, the album made me sure Mike Oldfield should stay away from lyrics.
"Big brown beastie, big round face
I'd rather be with you than flying through space." :-(
Not only trite but a horse has a "round" face? There go all the "What's with the long face?" jokes.
I know there are many people who pay no attention to lyrics and just get into the feeling of the song. I am categorically not one of them! I love really good lyrics and really clever lyrics. I absolutely hate trite lyrics or those that value rhyme over reason. Among my pet peeves in this area, those that will get an immediate station switch from me accompanied by complaining are "American Pie" (probably top of my list), "Fly Like a Beagle" (I'm sorry, was that Eagle?) and the ever popular "Holly, Jolly Christmas"
"Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn't hear
Oh by golly have a holly jolly Christmas
This year"
Lyrics rendered completely meaningless just in order to rhyme are about enough to make me apoplectic!
Now these are good lyrics:
"Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombassa in a barroom drinking gin
Roland aimed his Thompson gun - he didn't say a word
But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg"
The humor in the third line may be missed by some if they didn't pay attention to the song title "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner". Now Warren Zevon, there was a lyricist!
"I saw a werewolf drinkin' a piña colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect"
OK, rant over! (At least for now.)

Re: Beck and his black boxes.
I love Van Morrison but he had some dodgy moments...
"You can hang suspended from a star
Or wish on a toilet roll"
Toilet roll should never feature in any song lyric

I love that lyric too, plus the way it's delivered

No “wow” factor but the most natural sound I have got out of my cd system to date. I doubt I can improve on this without changing hardware but you never know........

Try to "torque" everything ... legs, box, CD mechanism in (and on bottom plate) the box, transformer, PCBs, connectors RCA and AC and so on ...

Yes indeed. With nearly no live gigs outdoors our hobby brings bands, orchestra’s, combo’s and singer/songwriters back in our homes.
