I briefly tried 308Ps downstairs with the monos on my Q acoustic stands without optimising their position and got the strong impression that they are more musical than my 242s ( which I really like).
But the looks make it a non starter downstairs - unfortunate, as your plan is a good one and gives maximal musical bang per buck.

Re: JBL 308P and 708P
I had lots of bass problems in my room with 308P. I actually had to plug the ports on the back to reduce bass even further from the -2dB that can be adjusted on the back of the speaker.ThomasOK wrote: ↑2021-11-17 17:33Hopefully Jajo will comment on this from experience. My expectation is that there wouldn't be a change in the balance. I would think that the 708Ps will just go a bit lower and be able to output more bass power when needed along with having more musicality top to bottom. But that is just my reading of it.u252agz wrote: ↑2021-11-16 23:17 These Mk 1 308s are incredibly musical and enjoyable. I’m currently listening to them with Kalla and Giella Pi and continue to be very impressed.
I’m tempted to consider the 708Ps for the additional jump in musicality (according to Jajo) but am concerned the Bass may be too much- I find the 308s quite balanced in this respect and don’t feel the need for the subwoofer.
Next are the Mk 1 305s for the loft - seem to be easier to source than the 308s and even better value.
To my surprise, with 708P the problem disappeared completely. I can now run them with the ports open and no bass adjustment with a very deep and clean bass. The best bass I have heard in a speaker probably.
So, 708P will most likely not have more bass, just deeper and most importantly better bass.
Re: JBL 308P and 708P
Thanks jajo
Sounds like the 708s are just ‘better’ all round - not what I was wanting to hear.
In my limited experience, well controlled bass is really important- I’d rather have minimal bass ( like my Komponent 110s ) as opposed to poor quality bass ( my Ninkas are guilty of this).
242s are OK with reasonable source and Lejonklou amps. The bass got better and better with each source and preamp/ amp upgrade.
I’m finding the 308s surprisingly good with the -2 dB setting for the vast majority of tracks. If I am being super picky there is the very occasional track where the bass may feel a little overblown. More noticeable with KDS/2 than Kalla.

Re: JBL 308P and 708P
I have a pair of 308 on their way to me since my 708’s got delayed and I couldn’t bare the silence any longer. So I’m going to be able to compare them directly.

Re: JBL 308P and 708P
has anyone tried the 308 or the 708 directly connected to the Källa and only use the volume setting of the loudspeaker?
is that possible or not recommended?
not sure about output and input impedance and if that would request too much from the output stage of the Källa?

jajo answered this question somewhere. I suppose the volume control of the speakers is a digital one.

yes it was answered in a way that it probably doesnt lead to better musical joy but my question was if it possible without putting the output stage of the Källa under pressure
Re: JBL 308P and 708P
This gain knob is used for fine tuning the speakers and should not be used as a volume control. The lowest setting is not low enough for most people and sounds horrible.

thank you Jajo thats what I wanted to know

BTW,
what are your impressions about Källa?

I will write my conclusions in the Källa thread
it turns the things you think you know upside down
most musical source I ever heard
does most better than my LP12
if you doesnt know you would never think you listen to a digital source

Have you ever heard Kali LP 8 or Kali LP 6 Jajo? I'm interested in them purely they're a breakaway from JBL and seem to be going after the same market as the JBL 3 series.jajo wrote: ↑2021-09-17 00:03Yes, I have listened to lots of monitors.
When I first discovered the JBL 308 I got excited about the performance and tried many other speakers.

These are probably the "second best" after the JBLs that I have tried, Genelec 1029A. Unfortunately they were quite a bit behind the JBLs in both musicality and sound quality so they didn't stay very long. The newer Genelecs (with the typical grey "rounder" boxes) are not my cup of tea with very detailed/analytical sound and weak musicality.
Yamaha never impressed me, neither did Adam Audio (although I know they are very highly rated by many). M Audio is probably the worst of the ones you mention and the models I've tried has performed poorly.
Worth noting is that JBL is no guarantee for quality. The new LSR 306P (MK2) are much less musical than 305P (MK1) and 308P (MK1). Also the 305/308P MK2 are inferior to the MK1.
My recommendation list so far for studio monitors would be 1) JBL 708P 2) JBL 308P MK1 3) JBL 305P MK1 4) JBL 308P MK2 5) JBL 305P MK2 6) Genelec 1029A

Re: JBL 308P and 708P
I'm trying out my subwoofer via the tape out on my Linn preamplifier. The line out adapters (or RCA splitters) I tried didn't work for me. Linn's support line was as helpful as usual.

Re: JBL 308P and 708P
Initial impression of 308 (not installed, cold equipment; no love at all) compared to TM/3677 is not encouraging at all. It sounds really bad to be honest.
Hopefully the will sound better when everything has warmed up and they are installed properly, but I have to admit I find it difficult to believe that they will ever be able to sound even close to my old setup. Kind of glad I couldn't get rid of the 3677's as planned ...

They need 1-2 hours from fully cold to warm up and perform.
Also, they sound VERY different from 3677 so don't expect the same "slam" and "aggressive" sound. It can take some time to get used to. 708P is more similar to 3677 when it comes to "energy" in the sound.
Also, like always, a very careful installation is required for them to play at their best. They are even more sensitive than 3677 from my experience.

Would it be possible to do clips comparing? Please ...
I know that tune

Graham Audio stands but they don’t fit as I expected, so I’m probably gonna have to get something else.jajo wrote: ↑2021-11-23 15:32Which stands are you using?Azazello wrote: ↑2021-11-23 13:59 Initial impression of 308 (not installed, cold equipment; no love at all) compared to TM/3677 is not encouraging at all. But it’s really the dynamics that worries me. Glad to hear that the 708 delivers more in that area!
But now I have to stop complaining and start working on placement.
