How many "K´s" do you have?

Post by Music Lover »

Wasn´t better in the old days when Linn had "K" in every produkt name?

Today I only have 6 K´s in my system.
(K400 not included)

And what "K" name is the best?

This thread is quite silly but I hope you dont mind...

Was that actually ever the case? Unless you are being nostalgic about the 70's when Linn only had a handful of products? The Index and Sara speakers predate my Linn experience (which goes back 18 years now) and there is certainly no "K" in those names. :)

The only "non-K" products in my current system are Lingo (introduced in 1990 was it?) and Linto (1997) and neither product is exactly new.

The SARA was considered to fit the theme as it was the "Isobarik SARA". SARA was supposed to be short for Small Acoustical Reproduction Apparatus but was more likely named after Ivor's daughter. The Index was the first of a short lived attempt to use Xs as well as Ks to give more flexibility in naming hence: Axis, Helix, Nexus. As most of these products were not big winners for Linn they eventually gave up the X theme.

There was also the AV series that all had numbers starting with AV but those got folded back into the K theme when upgraded models became Espek, Ekwal, Melodik, Kinos, etc.

Currently I can't really think of anything without Ks except the Lingo and Linto which make the (LP12) Linn_go and connect the Linn_to the preamp. Although we refer to the amps as C4200, C5100...they are correctly Chakra C4200. etc.

What is the best K name? I can understand the vote for Sondek both from a sonic and historical standpoint. But I have to say that Klout and Klimax are probably the strongest names. What can you say about a hi-fi that has Klimax Kontrol and multiple Klimaxes in it? I also have a weak spot for Keltik as it begins and ends with a K, is a fitting name for a Scottish product, and was (and is) one hell of a speaker. Why Classik doesn't begin with a K (Klassik) is something I still don't understand.

I do have a weak spot for the old, and now reclaimed, system of having "K" in every produkt name! The "AV"-system had absolutely no charm. My system is nowadays regarded as "old-school" since it only contains LK-boxes, but it gives me a "pure" K-system!

I agree with you Thomas, Keltik is the best K name!

I always liked the following combinations as their names sound smooth together:
KariK/NumeriK
Kairn/Klout

And the look and feel of LK-boxes still makes me happy

Klimax Kontrol is also a very nice and describing name.
But did they totally lost their minds on Solo o Twin :?

My favourite name is Keilidh.

I have Sondek, Akito, Adikt, Kairn and Ninka at present... Eveything but the Lingo and the (boooring) AV 5125 is properly named!

Haha, guess that answer is valid as she is/was a Linn employee, right

Number of K´s in my system ?

As I have the old school system with LK 85 active I have seven K´s in my system. Ikemin, Pekin, 2X LK 85, K 400, Ninka and Kollektor.

I´ve had this setup for about one year now and it sounds really good !

Thanks!

As you can imagine, the Exotik handles all the multi-channel and digital stuff, and feeds the front channels to the Kontrol. Maybe this is something for Barend too?

The CD12 is new to me: I drove 1350km last weekend to buy it off a friend who traded up to a Klimax DS recently :D
Listening to his Akurate 350s driven by 2 Solos was quite a treat 8)

I also got the sinking feeling that it might be an expensive visit, as it got me started on thinking what might be a suitable successor to my active Ninkas driven by 2 2250s...

Cheers,
JW

I bet!
What were his/your thoughs about the DS compared with his old CD12?

K-DS vs CD12

Post by JW »

Music Lover wrote:What were his/your thoughs about the DS compared with his old CD12?
The DS hadn't been run in yet: it was only 4 days old when I got there, and was still improving

Still, the difference between CD12 and DS was substantial, even on redbook. We didn't do too much direct comparison, as it's clear within a second or two that the DS does everything better. It's not just more tuneful (lots of involuntary foot-tapping going on), it somehow impresses by not being impressive, if you see what I mean. It's a bit like the Kontrol, which seems not to be there at all

The difference on HDCD is a bit smaller, but the DS is still much better.

Something else that might be of interest: naturally his setup and mine (Artikulat350+Solos and Ninka+2250s) are difficult to compare, but on SACD material the DS couldn't hold a candle against my now-gone Akurate CD. So, just for fun, we downloaded a studio master track from Linn Records (Messiah, disc 2, track 16) and fed that to the DS. Wow 8) :P
Of course the direct comparison of this track being played in hi-res on the DS and redbook on the CD12 almost made the CD12 sound clunky

Wouldn't that be an expensive step for relatively little gain?

Also, even though it might be a long way away, I'd eventually like to end up with some Klimax power amps :D

Me too, but it will probably be in my next life!

You could always buy ex-demo or used from a dealer. Judging from previous comments, I think a 4200 would still be worth considering, although I must confess to not having compared the two amps (or of even hearing the 2250  ).
I'm not sure a single Klimax Twin would be enough to better a 4200 driving aktiv Ninka's, especially in terms of Tune Dem. I've heard a Klimax Twin Vs 6100 driving aktiv Ninka's and it was very close.
