Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Hi all, no idea where to throw this so I am dumping it on the longest thread.
I am doing what I can to reply to things here and keep up, but this weekend I managed to chop off the tips of the pads of my right thumb and index finger. I'm afraid the mandoline won the battle (but it is now in the trash so I won the war). It took a fair bit of time to stop the bleeding but all should be well in a while. Meantime with all the bandaging my keyboard and mouse skills are significantly reduced so you may note a reduction in the long posts and replies I am known for. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will have grown back new skin and be fully functional again (if I ever was in the first place).

Aarghh! You have my full sympathy. A few years ago I bought a new set of kitchen knives, and made the mistake of trying to catch one that I dropped.
The second time I dropped one I stepped back and it fell to the floor...

Oh, yeah. My kitchen knives are very sharp. No trying to catch them if I drop one.

Now, if you had made a recording of your humming before and after the cut we could have compared them and found the most tuneful! :-)ThomasOK wrote: ↑2020-09-09 19:39

That sounds horrible Tom. Hope you mend soon.

Humming before, swearing after. After certainly less tuneful.

Crikey, Tom, that's taking it too far with the sharing of tips... Very sorry to read of your injury; wishing you a full & speedy recovery.

Yeah, it's not easy to use a torque screwdriver without tips.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
So what has made me resign from making any more changes to my cd player setup?

Ingenious Beck!

Not at all :-). Just another thing I had to try and I think this one came from Linn originally but I am not sure.FairPlayMotty wrote: ↑2020-09-10 21:22Ingenious Beck!beck wrote: ↑ So what has made me resign from making any more changes to my cd player?

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
With is so much better (I felt it ;) and the feeling and meaning of the music is lost without it.
Can it still rock out with Don Henley though? I mean it should but just checking.
------
My experience so far with the Oppo player. It doesn't like any materials inside the tray, but I had nice improvements with
using double sided Scotch tape and putting a piece of fabric on the outside tray cover.
In the middle where the Compact Disc logo is placed usually.
It could've looked very silly but was lucky the fabric and the tray cover is the same black color.

Great that you found some improvement though not as I suggested.
In my cd player it makes any cd better (also Don Henley). It cannot beat my Sondek but it is closer than ever.

This is exactly how I feel when listening in my room.Whatsmynaim wrote: ↑2020-09-10 23:03 With is so much better (I felt it ;) and the feeling and meaning of the music is lost without it.
Another thing I think worth mentioning is that this comes at the end of a long series of small improvements so it could just be that final drop filling the glass.....

Don Henley once again:

My take is that the cd version is now good enough for me to get the “rocky” feeling.

I agree with you to 100% - I was surprised that I was hearing the CD version when I opened my eyes to check if A is CD or LP12.beck wrote: ↑2020-09-11 10:37 Don Henley once again:

I still like the LP12 more even though the CD might sound more „rocky“ - the LP12 is better in total.
Big achievement.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Beck, did you use Dynamat or similar damping as in the attached?

My work has been damping the vibrations before the get into the cd player via power cable and interconnects.

I found it very striking how devoid of ringing that case was after damping. And also that Cambridge Audio use damping beneath the transport.

The other electrical cable separation tweak was reminiscent of the suggestions by ThomasOK.

The only expensive item I use in my hunt for better music playing cd’s is the Sondek on top of it! :-)
