Now DSD128 with Klimax Katalyst

Post by matthias »

Hi guys,

with Davaar 4.60.192 Linn supports up to DSD128 with Klimax DS Katalyst.

Has someone compared DSD to PCM with the DS?

Thanks

Matt

I remember Linn was strongly against this.
Still think DSD is a bad idea but now we can compare
It's all about musical understanding!

I have compared and the difference is massive. I can only advice you to listen in your system with your data to determine what you prefer for each title available in both formats.
Read the referenced link in the previous points for my thoughts.

Two free DSD downloads in DSD64 and DSD128, perfect for testing the DSD capabilities of the DS:

Linn Germany told me today there was pressure from clients in Japan and China to support DSD.

Please report further findings about DSD playback with your DS here and/or on the LF.
Thanks

Has someone tried to stream DSD128 from Audirvana 3.1 to the DS?
Thank you.

I tried 4.60.192, comparing DSD v. PCM on a native DSD recording (Biber - Podger - Channel Classics).
Native DSD sounds way better (I bet this only applies to DSD native recordings, conversiona are never optimal).
But...
To my ears, on my system, when I compare "normal" PCM files 4.60.192 to my previous 4.54.135 it sounds better, clearly better (or 4.60.192 worse).
So I went back to 4.54.135 since DSD in only a minimal part of my files.

Thanks Manelus,

did you try the latest 4.60.193 vs. 4.60.192. Maybe this version is better as well?

I have checked and I was wrong, the one I tried was 4.60.193 not 4.60.192.
I can't find 4.60.192 to try as well. Anyone?

Has anyone tried 4.59.185? I find it slightly preferable to my earlier favourites like 4.53.125 and 4.54.135 which both sound slightly “pitchy” in comparison.

However, I would say that all three are more musical than any of Linns latest offerings, sadly!

Very fond of 4.61.196 (better timing), first change since 4.56.173.

Ahh, I haven’t tried that one yet. I tried 55.172 (which I didn’t like) and missed 55.173. I thought 60.193 was ok but not as good as 59.185. At this point (after comparing different firmwares for several hours) I lost the will to live and went back to 58.185. I’m loading up 61.196 just now; I’ll let you know how I get on.

I’ve given 61.196 a good listening and I still have a preference for 59.185. I find that 59.185 has a magical quality which reminds me of the best turntables.

How do you feel about giving 59.185 another go? It could be a system dependent difference (unlikely), it may have passed you by unnoticed (possible) or I could be completely wrong (well, there’s always a first time! lol :-)

I usually download the Betas, I'll have to check if I have the 59.185 tonight and then possibly try it.
