Settled on a Tukan position. Also have a new addition - this is the cheaper one...

I will try some of those JBL active speakers too, once I can find a pair.

Cheaper as in Giella vs Giella ∏, or Gaio vs Slipsik?

No need to apologise, Charlie1.0 :)

Do you prefer the Tukans over the various Kans that you've tried? The comment about the JBLs suggests not completely, or that could just be your curiosity... :?

I love Kan 1s as you know but I think their time has passed unless Linn or someone like Fredrik were to produce a caps kit for them. The white Kans are by far the most musical but they sound like a duvet has been put over them and I'd had enough of it.

I like the Tukans a lot but I suspect I will want something with a little more resolution in due course.

Lego has 212s working great with a 92-spec LP12 and Kairn/Klout so they are another option.

What do you think of the Tukans in the clips? Happy to have negative feedback. There is a slight hardness in the clips (esp drums) that I don't notice (or is not present) in the room.

I also improved it slightly afterwards, making it a bit less stiff - I'd pushed in the spikes too much.

The first track was sounding brash, the second one not as much. I did enjoy the Tracy Chapman track quite a bit.

I can never listen to Tracy Chapman without remembering a conversation at a record store when her first record came out. I wanted to get one for demo in the store since it was very popular and sounded good. The people who worked at the store looked at me funny when I asked for it. When I questioned that they just said "We prefer the original."

Surprisingly good after I turned the volume up. A bit thin or echoey on the beginning of Tracy Chapman track, but that's likely the recording... the Robert Cray clip sounds fuller so it's not the setup. Overall, both clips are musical & better balanced, smoother than I remember from your Kan clips, but they don't seem to shake off your comment from your setup thread: "more like a HiFi than real people", but that's asking a lot (too much?) of small speakers - easily (enjoyable) listening more than totally convincing if I'm being harsh, but then there's a reason I like my speakers big box (& I cannot lie :) or it's a consequence of listening to the clips here, and less a reflection of how they sound in the room :?

Thanks for the feedback gents and I think you're right on all counts.

I too generally find bigger speakers more realistic and often more relaxed. But I've become fussy over bass which can be poor, or else they can sound complicated in some way. The 140s were ok in that room (a bit boring in some ways). The Keilidhs just didn't work last time I tried them and I really enjoy them in the office so can't see the point in moving them. the Ninkas didn't last long at all - not sure I even shared clips of those.

Agreed. I love the Tukans, but the 308P is on a whole new musical plane.

Thanks Mi8 for the JBL endorsement

Thanks EMM for the Kaber suggestion. I've done active with Ninkas and just don't want the cabling and extra amps. But your not the first to suggest that I'd like them 🤔

Tried the Valhalla/Ittok/VM95E deck in the main system with Wakonda/LK140/212s. Similar to Lingo 1, it didn't seem to show it's normal strengths with the 212s as opposed to Kans. Also, I think the 212s need better resolution than it could offer. I can see me trying a Cirkus bearing in one of the decks at this rate and bringing everything closer to the LP12 that would have been in production when the 212s/242s were developed - I guess around 2002. It seems to me that sometimes it's best not to stretch things too far across the timeline. There's a lot to be said for just buying an all-new system and leaving it alone for 15-20 years :)

This reminds me of the conversation I had with my wife after completing our house build.

Me: "We've learned so much building our own house, maybe we should build another"
My wife: "The first build nearly killed you, and if a second doesnt, then I will!"

Upgraded Giella Pi 1.2 arrived today. Was enjoying the new DM album well enough this morning using 12/160, but it's much better with modern Lejonklou phono and pre-amp. More tuneful but also helps cut through the thick heavy dense sound of many modern recordings.

This is true :D

Thanks - I'm quite surprised by the improvement.

I keep second copies, 7" singles, and shite music up in the garage office. The main collection is in the house, but I just fancied seeing what I could find. What I'm saying is that I'm really NOT a Spandau Ballet fan, although I've always had a soft spot for this one <last one as you know what I'm like!>

So it’s one step back and two steps forward. One to the side and two back again. I’m not talking about your system charlie1, it’s how I danced to Depeche Mode in the 80’s.

They control the 212 bass which was actually my main requirement along with amps that would be serviceable long-term. Obviously more tuneful and better sound across the board to my LK140. Also removed some of the over-warmth. There's not a sense of power like Linn Klimax amps but it's enough.

Getting one of the Ekos/Lingo decks fitted with Cirkus bearing and Adikt so that will be interesting to compare with this pre-Cirkus deck with VM95ML on this system.

Also getting some K400 and Silver ICs to try. Basically, bringing the Linn stuff forward to about 2002.
