No apologies needed : as always I really appreciate everyone's responses.

I think I'm starting to find it easier to make consistent decisions based on comparing clips than comparing in the room. Either way, I still find these comparisons difficult, so feedback is really helpful

…. and my point is that any setup is faulty and that in the end you have to choose what floats your own boat.

I think so. When we compare and discuss we get an understanding of what is going on even though we choose differently in the end.
The many different hifi systems we can buy are proof that we prefer different aspects of the music reproduction. One golden standard has not been found.

With each comparison I improve my understanding of music, because the different opinions on one and the same piece of music offer just as many understandings.
