I tried the latest one and a few more recommended Davaars yesterday and I still think my good old 4.14 is the best one. It's a close call between 4.12 and 4.14 but I find the latter to be the most musical one. I could happily live with 4.12.

I must confess I hurried a bit when comparing DS firmwares. Linnofil kindly remaindered me to try earlier ones and especially 4.1.10. This one is better than 4.14 and I will use it even if it lacks support for Airplay and Tidal.

Eric
4.1.10 was released as Beta in april 2011.
It's possible that nowadays, when you have a better equipment (and also an updated Harmonihylla as well as LS-NAS introduced 2013) - it's easier to judge.
I suggest we all compare.

My KDS is upgraded to the latest /2 spec (=first type of DS with analogue out, no HDMI)
Can I use old firmware - anyone that know...or tried?
It's all about musical understanding!

It's mot about judging, I only compared 4.12 and newer before I was reminded.

Music Lover,

Have you tried Davaar 35 (release version)? I'm using it and I find it very musical. I can listen to it for hours without fatigue setting in, and when doing TuneDems, it's right on the money.

Guys, what DS are you using and what firmware are you comparing 35 with?

My previous favourite was 12.357, but since changing to a KDS/2 my firmware choices are limited to 25, 31, 32, 33 and 35.

When I upgraded the KDS (about 4 months ago) I also bought a new pair of Akudoriks, so the system performance has been a bit variable as they both run in. I've tried all the firmwares, but I was never 100% happy with the performance of any of them. The system has been very consistent for the last couple of weeks, and with Davaar 35 (release version) the sound is sublime. Probably for the first time since not having a top spec LP12 I'm delighted with my system. It's been a long time coming, but well worth the wait. Is it due to the system now being run in or is it due to Davaar 35? I can't really answer that. I should really go back to the earlier firmwares and double check, but the system is sounding so good I haven't felt the need.

Oops, I've made a bit of an error. I'm using a beta of Kazoo and since the last update I can't access my NAS. I opened Konfig to reboot the DS only to discover that I've been running Davaar 34, not 35. This wouldn't be a problem except for Linn having removed D34 because it can potentially lock up the DS. I didn't fancy that happening to mine so I upgraded to D35. Hopefully it will be as good as D34.

With regard to my system, it's a KDS/2 directly into a Klimax Twin/1 and passive Akudoriks. However, this doesn't really say much about "my" particular system because as usual, the devil's in the detail. I really should explain more in the "My System" thread.

Just a quickie. I've heard Davaar 35 on a couple of different systems and I'm 80% sure it's not as good as D34. On both occasions I was only able to listen for a minute, but the experience wasn't good. I'll listen for longer again later today.

Thats interesting, as I was tempted to upgrade from Davaar 34 after your favourable comments on Davaar 35.

Having heard 35 on other DS's I feel, yet to be proved, I prefer 34 as well.

Certainly with a KDS2 Tundra and 242s it sounds excellent.

Have also enjoyed it with Exakt akubariks.

I've just installed 35, going from 32. Clearly better IMO. I've tried 33 but found it less musical than 32.

I really admire your restraint! Why I messed with something I was really enjoying, heaven only knows!!! I only hope that I haven't encouraged anyone to upgrade their DS before we're sure D35 is an improvement. Apologies if that's the case.

I'll have a look on my computer to see if I've got a copy of D34 so you can give it a try. I may not have one because I downloaded directly via Konfig and I'm not sure if it keeps a copy. If not, we'll have to put out a call for a copy.

Thanks for your offer Spannko but I have ADSM/1. The file AkurateDsm_4.34.xxxx.zip it's the only thing that would work really.

Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of KlimaxDs_4.34.1484.zip on my computer and I've searched the internet without any joy.

Does anybody have a copy?

Just be a little bit wary of 34. The reason it was withdrawn was that one or two people managed to completely "brick" their DS/DSM when applying it. I don't know which model and what specific circumstances applied when it was being updated, but I just thought I'd mention it...

As the release notes for 35 say:
Fixed problem where certain DS devices with Exakt outputs would not boot with Davaar 34
Looks like it's only a concern if you have Exakt outputs on your device, so fine for anyone with a Renew, for instance.

Thanks roland. I'm inclined to give it a go still, since I'd been using it for a while without a problem.
