Some test results from the few latest firmwares.
.17 = good in many ways
.20 = just a tiny bit more musical but sounding less good. Compressed, less details. Boomy?
.23 = better tune and quite good sound. Not the best sound but close.

.23 is totally one of the best firmwares. Going to use it from now on.

Same for me, did my upgrade from Bute 0.9 today and I'm amazed! Great stuff from Linn. My ADS has almost a LP12 style sound and music now!

My opinion on latest Cara:
17: the most musical and engaging, sounds a bit harsh
18: a bit less musical than 18, sligltly better sound
20: more musical than 18 but not tuneful as 17 and with some boomy bass
23: even more musical than 20, very nice and detailed sound but 17 is still more musical.

So 17 is still my favorite and not completely sure if 23 is better...
I'all retest and compare them again.

Me too, I went from Bute 09 (which I used just because it worked with Songbook, even if 06 was better), to Cara 23.

What a difference. I was continually playing with the placing of the speakers before as something wasn't quite right, now I'm just playing music including things that I didn't play before. Great stuff, is there more to come from firmware upgrades?

Also KinskyDesktop is so much better than the Bute version. It took a bit of time to get the KK and KDS named correctly so I could see the DS playlist and adjust the volume without changing the dropdown selection, but once done it looks great and works well, and especially the Kompact mode is now a permanent feature of my PC desktop.

I'm very glad I upgraded, no bugs encountered yet even with Songbook (that also required naming the DS and KK correctly to function).

I only just saw it a minute before you posted. I am going to wait a few days. I am going to audition the new Dynamik power supply tomorrow and if all goes well, it will be installed on the spot.

I am still on 3.1.17 and quite like it.

Not yet - strangely there's no info on the relevant beta pages - they've not been updated since 27th July.

My take is this new update is the most musical cara. I think I could live with this one long term.

I was going for the update. I was prompted to update my Linn config first. I did so and wanted to go to 3.1.25 but now the updates are no longer listed under the update tab????

Any suggestions on what I did wrong? Should I have updated to 3.1.25 before updating the Linn config app? If so, can anyone point me to the previous linn config file?

Thanks for any help!

I think Cara is now out of Beta - you should update Konfig to the latest (3.1.26 as of today) and then you'll have the option of choosing "Cara 1" under updates - I get that but when I try to update I get "unable to download all files required for the update to complete". Maybe they're still putting stuff up on their server.

Mick

EDIT: just tried again and it's now updating... Cara 1 here we come!
EDIT 2: All finished - version shows as "Cara 1 (3.1.25)".

Yep, they must have been busy updating the stuff. I now get a prompt to go to 3.1.26 so I should be able to to do the update now!

I also upgraded to the Dynamik power supply today. I should schedule some serious listening time 8)

I did the update and all appears to have gone well. I am now on cara 1(3.1.25). Funny enough in the update tab I can stil see Cara 1 as available update after I closed and reopened the Linn config. Is that normal?

Lennart

P.S. also the family is still listed as unknown. Shouldn't this be Cara after a succesful update to version 1?

ok, uploaded the production Cara (3.1.25) two days ago.
Not bad at all!
Very tuneful but sound isn't as dynamik, detailed and live as the best beta (17), very close though...

Overall likely the best firmare.
Well done Linn!

What do YOU think?

And what happened with Cara beta v26?

I think 3.1.26 was Konfig only, and that the most recent firmware is 3.1.25

Anyone have tried new Cara 3.2.1 beta?
Installed yesterday and listened my DS for many hours like not happen as long!
I've never been fully convinced by the sound of Cara1 except for 3.1.17 beta, and now I can say this Cara2 is a HUGE improvement over Cara1 both musically and sonically.
Please post your impression!

Here is another 3.1.17 fan :D
I liked Cara 1 but wasn't sure it was better than 3.1.17 that I was using. I just took the plunge and updated to the new beta. First impressions are good 8)

I liked .17 as well, for the Naimish sound. Also very musical.

Cara1 was more musical and detailed, not so hard hitting though. Little laid back.

Using Cara2 for some days it is the most musical and rock as .17! me like :D
Not as detailed as the best firmwares, more congested with less wide soundstage. But who cares - it's ROCKS!
