K-400 & BFA plugs

Post by audiokaas »

This could be a truely great forum, Best of succes.

My question:

What is the best way to attach K-400 loudspeaker cable to the Linn BFA plugs as they are supplied with the older amps, in my case 2250

They need to be inserted from below because of space restrictions!

Soldered with what?
Bare wire screwed?
Wire in ferule, crimped and then screwed ?

Hope someone has looked into this?

Hi Lex and thanks for the good wishes!

I have experimented with this many times. So far, the best method has been to solder the K400 to the BFA, but a high wattage soldering station and a high thermal capacity pen/tip is needed for best results. Also, the solder* and temperature makes a big difference.

If the soldering can not be done well (and the BFA's are a bit difficult to solder well because of their high mass), the second best seems to be to crimp a ferrule around the K400 and then screw it to the BFA. This gives a sharper and more detailed sound, but compared to an optimally soldered connection, it is not as flowing and tuneful.

Once again, the details make a difference: Of the ferrules I have tried, the best have been of pure copper (with surfaces polished), second best have been silver/tin plated. The crimping tool and pressure matter as well.

*) I sell the best solder I have found in rolls of 10 m/36 g
