New firmware for DS: Bute
I just got a hand on the latest 'Bute' firmware for my A-DS. I'll try to install it tonight and see how it goes.

Hello everybody,
I've just installed the latest software in my K-DS. Feeling is very positive, it adds some features and, most important, sounds better. More melodic and flowing, makes me sing along with the music even more than before! :D

Finally had a chance last night to listen music for a while. IMHO it's a lot better now! Tunewise there is an improvement (it may be that I have not listened to it for a few days and been listening to my iPod in my car!!!) ;)
Besides, internet radio is now available on the A-DS!!! Also some FLACs that skipped previously now play without problem.
Cannot compare it with a Unidisk since I never got a hold of one.

Ok friends, SW upgraded and I’m speechless! (Luckily I can still write)
This is a fundamental upgrade.
The Sound; more details, nicer sound, more dynamics and suddenly the soundstage got a lot larger.
Saving the best news to the end, OOOOH MY GOD SOOO MUSICAL!
Emotions, feeling and flow.
This enhancement is a lot bigger than ESS221 --> 227 (Unidisk SW) regarding sound and a LOT bigger than 227 --> 221 regarding musicality.
Sitting with a silly grin on my face, browsing the music collection “just need to hear one more record..”
Linn, WELL DONE :!:
When is next upgrade released? 8)

Short update...
Skipping tracks takes a little longer, the new SW hestitate before doing the "fast mute, skip track, fast unmute". Don't like that... :(
The DS or LinnGUI has a bug. Suddenly the track is changed...Happened three times during 4 hours.
YES, the performance is still on another level.

The instruction is rahter short.
Items to know
- you dont need to delete the old LinnGUI and config SW before installing the new SWs (one of the enhancements in this release), but the shortcuts icons on your desk is NOT adressed so you have to delete these manually to create new shortcuts - irritating
- the instruction is not telling you to store&unpack the SW (click on the DS SW and follow instructions the instructions) to a folder on your PC before you start the upgrade using the Linn config SW. The installation program need an ULR to the file mention below...
- as a direct path to the correct file to load to the DS isn't listed in the manual so you have to search for it in the DS SW package where you have MANY subfolders/files - irritating
The path is something like this; Program files\Linn...\Softpack\"DS model"\1.2-0.4/S08040152\bin where you find the file AND the .bin folder
Make sure the "DS model" is correct so you dont upload Akurate DS SW to a Klimax.
If you are not 100% sure, dont upgrade yourself!!

Found the bug.
With the new SW, the KDS seems to be more sensitive for receiving signals from other remotes. :(
So far I detected three issues:
1/ Pressing “change channel up” on my Samsung LE32R87 LCD remote, DS jump to track 8 in the playlist. (or 88, 888, 8888 if you hold the up button longer)
Apparently the “up” sending 8’s…
You can see the digits on the DS display.
2/ The “change channel down” sending 0’s
3/ Reducing the volume using the TV remote put the DS into standby.
A nice new feature in the new DS SW is that you can skip many tracks by pressing/holding the >> (FW) or << (REW) key on the DS remote. THAT IS GREAT!
That the new SW displays the track title and artist is also VERY welcomed.
An old bug (#1224) is reopened. Putting DS in/out standby, the LinnGUI is not repopulated with info, until the LinnGUI is restarted. Irritating.
Before reporting this to Linn, anyone else having similar issues?

I haven't seen any of these issues, but I have had some strange behaviour from my Klimax KontrolMusic Lover wrote:

Kontrol no longer starts up at default volume, despite it clearly showing in the user options and Linnconfig. If you watch the display closely, you can see that it starts at the default, but very quickly switches to the last used volume.
Default Volume at startup works if I set Startup Volume to Last Source rather than Default on the Kontrol. This is the opposite of what I'd expect.
In addition, LinnGUI sees ALL of my source devices (TV, LP12, UNIDISK) as well as KLIMAX DS and ANOTHER source called simply DS!!! If I go into Linnconfig and change the Kontrol settings so that the TV etc do not display in GUI, then I can’t select them on the Kontrol – they disappear from there too! Not a big issue for me as I don't use LinnGUI, just a Nokia N800.
The DS itself seems fine - Internet Radio works, haven't tried MP3s.
I hear no difference in performance between Auskerry and Bute.

Linn are now including the following advice in the DS Upgrade:
"If after upgrading the DS player you find that it is not operating as it should, open the Linn Config, select the DS player, select the Advanced Configure tab and take a note of all the settings. Press the Restore Defaults button.
Wait until the screen returns to its normal view (3 - 4 minutes). Re-enter the settings."
I've found that it solves the starup volume issue, but all inputs still show in LinnGUI. However, the "odd" DS entry has gone, being replaced by "Analog 5" as I'd expect. This can be turned off as it's not used.

That's a useful website.
I see there is a reference to the Nokia N800
"The Nokia Media Streamer has a known bug where it can stop playing continuously after the screen has turned off when the application has been used heavily for a long period of time. If this happens simply restarting the Media Streamer or the N800 itself will fix the problem temporarily."
Several forum members have commented on this, but I've not heard it referd to as a known bug before.

Be careful, the upgrade instruction seems not 100% accurateaudiokaas wrote:I found the following "public link", get it while you can :Pteatime wrote:How are people getting their hands on the software update? Do I really need to go through my dealer, or is it available for download somewhere?

I can confirm that the new SW sounds great on a Sneaky DS to! Simply a lot more music, for free! :D The GUI has crashed once and some songs in my playlist have been cut short, but no other bugs so far for me. This is great! Incredible value for money with this little DS player! I would be even more happy if it wasn't a loaner...
Thanks Audiokaas for the link, very useful!
