FRIWO 12 v medical grade PSU for Netgear GS108 switch
So for a HiFi Kabin social at my house last weekend, I bought one of the FRIWO Med grade 12v power supply for the gs108-200 switch and swapped it over as part of our listening tests. There was a good instant improvement, especially for £48 inc vat from RS. However it has continued to improve considerably over the last few days. Giving a more analogue LP12 like sound and most of all improves tunedem.

Interesting. I've ordered an iFi PS which claims to use jet Def technology to reduce ripple to 1 uV. It will be interesting to see how it compares with the FRIWO.

iFi - hope it doesn't sound 'iffy'...Spannko wrote:Interesting. I've ordered an iFi PS which claims to use jet Def technology to reduce ripple to 1 uV. It will be interesting to see how it compares with the FRIWO.
Interesting Flat... thanks for posting. I have to admit that I am a little surprised that all the pieces add up to something better, but guess that the quality supply itself overcomes any losses from the interchangeable connectors. Most of what I could follow on the Linn site was 220-240v in EU/UK. Do you know of any reports of MPP15 use in the US on 110-120v, and improvement over the standard Netgear wall-wart for the GS108?

Toke,
I gained this recommendation from two Canadian Linn Forum members. Paulsurround and Eldarboy. The unit comes with mains adaptions for worldwide use so it should be just as effective for you in the US as it was for them in Canada. Unless of course the Canucks do something different with the leccy!

Flat,
thanks for reporting. Did someone compare these PS to the ifi audio ipower? The ipower is in the same price range but has better specs.

Re: FRIWO 12 v medical grade PSU for Netgear GS108 switch
I've had the iFI at home for about four days. Initial impressions are that the sound is tighter and clearer, from bass to hf and the imagery is more holographic. So in a HiFi sense, it's a definite improvement. But from a musical perspective, it's a slight step backwards. The combination of an impressive sound which is slightly out of tune leaves me feeling uncomfortable - it's certainly not relaxing.
However, it's only been four days. I'm hoping that things will improve over the coming weeks. And, one things for sure, it's highlighted just how important the PS to the switch is and could help to explain one of the reasons why the Melco works so well.
I'll leave it a couple of weeks, then I'll do some recordings for everyone to hear for themselves.

Good plan!
Where are you based? Can you insert the power plug in two ways reversing the phase?

Re: FRIWO 12 v medical grade PSU for Netgear GS108 switch
I'm based just north of Birmingham,UK.
The iFI uses one of those wall wort designs with clip in male connector adapter thingies. Because of the U.K. three pin configuration, it can't be reversed.
The netgear ps is 12V/1.0A, whereas the iFI is 12V/1.8A, so it's more than man enough for the job.

Re: FRIWO 12 v medical grade PSU for Netgear GS108 switch
Just a quick update.
The iFI has been running for nearly two weeks, and over that time the sound has improved quite a bit - it's got past the stage of me having to revert to my Genelec PS when I want to listen for enjoyment.
To complicate matters, I'm also trying a Meicord Opal Ethernet cable. I didn't mention it previously because when new, and comparing to the MicroConnect, it was considerably worse - musically and sound wise. There was nothing to commend it, so I was getting ready to send it back. However, I persevered and plugged it in whenever I was out (and left the radio running). Over the last two weeks, it has got miles (or km, for our euro friends) better, to the extent that it sounds pretty good now. I don't feel the need to disconnect it when listening to music. On the contrary, I'm quite enjoying it!
Whether the iFI or Meicord is better than what I've been using up to now remains to be seen. I'll leave it another week and then do some listening and recording so you guys can hear a bit of what I'm hearing.

Here's three recordings comparing the iFi (D1) to the Netgear (D2) and a third PS I found in the shed (D3).

I rank them in the order they were posted: 1 best, 2 worse, 3 strange and probably the worst.

BTW, which exact model of GS108 are you using? And which is the best one? There are so many...

The recordings were made with a GS108 v3 and I've just plugged in a GS108T v2, so I'll put them on the list for recording along with the Meicord Ethernet cable.

Re: FRIWO 12 v medical grade PSU for Netgear GS108 switch
I've just noticed that I haven't updated my thoughts on the iFi power supply.
I bought the Friwo to compare it to the iFi. My initial thoughts about the iFi turned out to be correct. It produced a good enough sound, but was lacking musicality. The Friwo has a slightly better sound and is way better musically.
The Friwo with a Netgear GS108T is the best network switch and power supply combination I've come across to date.
