a little nas for linn ds

Post by wywyaa »

followed a link on linn forum, I came here and found lots of discussion about diy NAS for linn ds,i want show my little nas for linn ds, as an another choice

Software Specification:
I choice openwrt+twonkymedia(os+media server),reason list follows
1 openwrt is small and consume a little system resouces, and it's design for work 7*24, so it's stable.
2 openwrt works as an router while as a media(dlna)Server, can save a Gigabit router.
3 twonkeymedia is recommendated by lnnn,I thing it isnot bad for sound at least

Hardware Specification:

1: NAS case
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=18074935116
This is a small but skillful case . The aluminum casing is at least 3mm. Solid, stable

2: 300W dc-atx
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=19236884206
low ripple output is the most important reason, furthermore is fanless, Real 0dB

3: Motherboard, ZOTAC H77U3 WIFI
there are 5 sata, wifi, gigabit lad on board
you can choose others as you want, one things be charful that openwrt should support the wifi and lan on your board. check http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start and http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_a ... /packages/ for more detail

4: OS/mediaSever drive, any 2G usb flash disk.
all software and os install into a 2G usb flash disk. all the sata port on board can connect hard disk for flac stroage

Install instructions:
1 install openwrt on usb flash disk
2 install some utlity apps
hd-idle,an idle-daemon tools will let your hard drivers into idle state after a period setting time. it's health for hard driver's lifetme.
acpid an utlity responds the press power button event, then shutdown nas
3 setting your wifi as an ap for remote control.
4 install twonkymedia(x86 -uclib version)

Interesting! I am considering trying Linux on my NAS, but have never installed Linux before (used to DOS commands though). Is installing and setting up of wifi and Twonky complicated for a Linux beginner? If not, would you write some further instructions or know any good link?

I'm currently setting up a Raspberry Pi computer running Debian with Minidlna and Twonky for testing purposes. I think there is nothing smaller than that right now!

Interesting information on your NAS project. Just one question: How do you go about buying this case if you can't read Chinese? (The Google translator is virtually no help.)

Hi Rene,

Can you share HW and SW specs, so I can start building using your info?

Thanks

I'm also using a Raspberry Pi with RaspBMC for movies and miniDLNA as the UPNP/DLNA server for my Linn DS. Work perfectly and as noiseless as it can be!

I'm also using a Raspberry Pi with Raspbmc(XBMC) for movies and IP-TV (Svt Play, You Tube etc) and it is really stunning for the price (and power consumption). Just waiting for a Songcast app in Raspbmc(XBMC).....

I use a QNAP NAS for streaming, have anyone compared the Raspberry Pi NAS with other ones?
