Radikal PSU cable direction

Post by k_numigl »

Quite some time ago there was a discussion somewhere whether it is worth to change the internal PSU cable in the Radikal for optimum direction. TOK came to the final result: leave it as it is mounted by Linn. For a while I thought my box would sound better with reversed cable direction - but my final vote was the same as Thomas'. I provide a couple of links for those who don't like to work on the interiour but want to know the difference. rblads (first links) is reversed direction, rblads_rc (second links) is original direction. I provide them here and now to celebrate my recent finding of SoX, which allows me to cut my recordings in short clips easily. So these clips are small and contain 90 sec only. The files stay for 7 days only. Feel free to copy them to somewhere else if you can and want.

Best, Klaus

Thank you, Klaus!

Which direction do you refer to as the 'Linn direction'? Is it text running from power supply to main board ("with text") or the other way around ("against text"? I'm asking because the red and black shrink tubes that Linn add have been placed both ways.

Original: The text reading from the main board to the Dynamik power supply.

If it is true that the colored shrink tube is not an indicator for directionality, I doubt that Linn does (or is able to) care about the direction of this cable/these cables. And maybe another batch has another combination of directions? In my memory the difference was smaller than I feel now - seems substantial to me today.

Ok! That is what I label "against text".
I believe it's the most common way that Linn install these cables, so "original" is probably appropriate.

Since I noticed more than once that the black and red shrink tube were placed the other way around (but the cable was still installed with red in the source end), I stopped paying attention to the colour marking and only checked the direction of the text. In my experience, the direction of the text is consistent with the difference in sound quality (at least for this cable), so whenever it's visible it makes sense referring to that.

It was a long while since I evaluated this cable, but I definitely recall arriving at the opposite conclusion: That it should go "with text". I guess I will have to check it again.

I find original 'rc' files a little easier to follow musically, which I understand to mean text reading from board to psu (?)

Yes, correct, _rc is as supplied originally: text reading from the main board to the Dynamik power supply.

Must admit I found this comparison quite tricky when doing it for real - I only bothered with it the once. By the time I'd taken the Radikal out, swapped the wire around and put it all back and spun up the turntable again, it wasn't obvious to me. But your files make it so much easier. Thanks Klaus!
