About Slipsik 8...

Post by Peder »

Hi 🙂...

Some questions about the Slipsik 8.

• Have there been any upgrades
since it was launched.?
• How long does it have to be
powered before it performs
optimally.?
• What surface does it perform
best on.?
- Mana Acoustics glass shelves,.
or other suggestions.?
- What interconnect between the
Slipsik 8 and the amplifier do you
recommend.?

Something else to think about.

I can answer some of the questions:

No, there haven't been any upgrades to Slipsik 8 and none are planned.

To me it sounds good from the first minute, but I know that some enthusiasts are more sensitive to the warm-up period. I can't say that I hear any changes after about an hour.

I like Linn Black and Silver analogue interconnects.

Wonderful @Fredrik,.thanks for the answers, you were the best person who could answer my questions.

I bought a Slipsik 8 today for my other Linn player,.who has an MM cartridge.

🔷 Fredrik,.I have a new Linn K9 lying around, does it fit optimally with the Slipsik 8..or.?
Asking,.because my understanding, perhaps incorrect, is that you developed/optimized Slipsik 8 with an Adikt as a reference.

🔷 Then this question remains below

What surface does Slipsik 8 perform
best on.?
Mana Acoustics/Naim Fraim glass shelves,.or other suggestions.?

I only had little space left for my Slipsik 7.1, it stands on a 10 mm piece of slate and the slate is supported by two 4 mm Soundeck footers. Sounds well IMO.

MM cartridges are very alike in their requirements of the phono stage, with some exceptions.

It’s true that I only use Linn Adikt when working on Slipsik. With the less expensive Kinki and Adikt, I tried a number of MM cartridges just to make sure the phono stage sounded right with them all. But as the loading always turned out nearly identical and every improvement of the circuit sounded better regardless of which cartridge I used, I could have saved some time and used only one cartridge model all along.

It’s funny how the manufacturers specify a certain capacitance for their MM cart and that number can vary considerably, but then 68 pF + tonearm cable capacitance is nearly always the best.

It was a good while since I listened to Linn K9, but from earlier experiences I think it will work great with Slipsik.

I have found that Slipsik 8 works fine with the K9, I have it on an old well kept Linn Basik used in a second system, went from Gaio to Slipsik 8, a big leap. At times I have found the Basik/K9/Slipsik 8 more fun than a mid-level LP12, but not all the time.

I tried the K9 with the AT-VM95EN-stylus, it sounded good but the K9-stylus brought more swing to the music.

Hi again Fredrik 🙂...

The Gaio I bought pre-loved for my second system with a Linn Axis a week ago,.this Axis is recapped and serviced by Niclas as you know.
In my big system I have an LP12 with MC- cartridge.

The first night I heard Gaio in my system with my Axis,.I messaged Mats at Classic Design Scandinavia and bought a Slipsik 8 😁.
I changed the tonearm-cable last night on my Axis to a Vertere Redline,.just to try and evaluate.

BUT,.the Linn cable that is there original on the Axis, look at the first picture, the ground cable that should be attached to the tonearm base is cut off.
See the red circle.

When I installed the new Vertere-cable,.I did not attach the ground-cable to the tonearm base, see the middle picture to have similar conditions.

In both cases I still attached the ground-cable to the MM-riaa (Gaio),.see last picture.

🔷 Question:
Should I attach the ground-cable to the tonearm base from the Vertere tonearm cable, even though the Linn ground cable was cut off and not attached.

Asking because I have no experience with the Linn Axis,.I have only listened to and screwed in the LP12 since 1983.
OR,.if anyone else has an answer to the above.

♦️Ooops,.the pictures were reversed,.but you can probably link them to the text.

▪️Addendum,.to the post above:
In the picture my headphone-system (the two racks),.where the said Linn Axis will be placed on the Mana wall-shelf.

The process of installing the Mana Acoustic Reference wall-shelf started late last night...
AND,.will be completed today.

Will be exciting to switch the Axis turntable between the WOG-rack and the wall-shelf to possibly note differences...
Which I definitely think are there 😃.

I moved my Akito tonearm from an Axis to an LP12, and the dealer told me he would need to solder an earth connector on to the Akito cable because it would have been removed for the Axis.

So, it appears that the Axis does not need an earth connector for the tonearm cable.

Btw, I replaced a Kinki with a Slipsik 7 for my Axis, and was so impressed by the result that I ended up jumping to replace the Axis with an LP12.

The tone arm on Axis is grounded through the plug of the tone arm cable. So that should be fine.

Since there is no metal in the chassis of Axis (the subchassis is a Perstorp-board made of wood and melamine), the short ground lead that exits the tone arm cable plug has nowhere to go. So Linn cut it off. The platter is grounded to the mains inlet on the rear of Axis.

So the answer is, no you don't need to attach that ground lead anywhere.

Fredrik already answered that you don't need to connect it.

The reason it's there is that it's meant to be connected to the bearing. Roksan have a grounding screw connected internally to the bearing so that the tonearm, the bearing and the preamp can be connected to a shared ground. When Touraj left Roksan to form Vertere and designed Vertere's turntables, he kept elements of the Xerxes/TMS designs, including this option to ground the bearing.

EDIT: I am not familiar in detail with Vertere so I don't know if all of their turntables have this arrangement.

Hi 🧑‍🎄...
Interesting everything you say,.because I completely agree with you.

I started with a Gaio a few weeks ago,.and have had a Slipsik 8 connected to a recapped Axis for a few days now.
That combination together with a K9 is incredibly fun to listen to.

Almost to the point that it's more fun to listen to than my LP12.
I've also now replaced the original tonearm cable with a Vertere Redline tonearm cable on my Axis,.it made a big difference for the better in my system.
I also have my Axis on a Mana Acoustic Reference wall-shelf,.it also made a difference for the better.

But @Fredrik's Slipsik 8 is incredibly musically good and engaging,.it's actually hard to stop listening 😋.

These two needles should be really good, and fit in K9's "house"...
