Great sales video and look back at Linn.

Not massively excited by the product itself but then I'm not in the market for a new Klimax LP12 anyway.

Karousel would have been the perfect 50th present (cost effective and available across the product range) but I'm sure owners are glad they got it as soon as possible and not now.

It's not a competition but Naim defo beat Linn and Rega on this one.

I’m sure the Belgravia crowd will enjoy showing it to their friends together with their collection of sealed 45rpm half speed audiophile master series vinyls before getting bored and moving on to their watch collection.

Would they even pick a Linn though - ptobably not 'showy' enough.

Perhaps it’s just me, but I don’t think the rounded power button, top plate and armboard look good on the LP12.

The plinth looks interesting, though.

The look differentiates it from any other LP12 and adds to making it a truly limited edition. I’m interested in seeing how the inside of the plinth is laid out.

Top plate is basically the shape of an iPhone

Here’s a bit from Linn’s website regarding the new plinth:

“The sonic improvement comes by way of Linn’s all-new Bedrok™ plinth technology; formed of orthogonal layers of beech placed under extreme pressure to create an entirely new, solid and massive material. The consequent ultra-dense wood has negligible resonance and offers a superior isolating housing for the turntable’s mechanism.”

Not sure how this squares with ThomasOK’s thoughts regarding the most musical plinths:

“In the end the only reliable test for how good a plinth would sound compared to another plinth was the tap tone the plinths made when nothing was mounted to them. Over time I heard enough different plinth tap tones that I could give a pretty close ranking of how they would sound on the LP12 by the tap tone of the plinth. The plinths that were the most musical had a tap tone that sounded very harmonic, with a good spread of frequencies and a little ring but not too much. A long ring would lead to a midrange forwardness. Plinths that had a dead tap tone sounded dead, those that had a hashy tap tone sounded hashy and frequency imbalances in the tap tone, like lack of bass or soft highs. carried through to the turntable when assembled. I was glad I found some indicator that worked but I would have been glad to just be able to go by some measurement. But that seems to be the way it works.”

I haven’t done a tap tone test on the new 50th Anniversary Linn plinth but from Linn’s description I would assume it would be in the dead sounding category.

I had the same thought, John. Not going to spend £50k/$60k to find out... Hope it sounds better than it looks.

Curious way to celebrate a 50th anniversary; like paying for your wife to get a facelift that doesn't suit her... :/

The round corners of the arm board don’t work for me either. Neither does the rounded on one side SS top plate. The main problem is that Dieter Rams didn’t design anything which looked anything remotely like an LP12, so there was nothing for Jonny Ive to draw inspiration from.

The lid appears to be fixed semi permanently now too. I’d be concerned about vibration from the lid being more efficiently coupled to the plinth.

Orthogonal layers of beech compressed under pressure. So that’s beech plywood or a multiplex beech panel then?

I agree that the LP12-50 has some nice touches and some quirks. Nothing that makes me want to part with my CH fluted ebony plinth besides the new hinges. Maybe ebony also share some properties with Panzerholz?
