Record player for daughter

Post by Hermann »

My daughter was visiting yesterday for a joint breakfast,. It was supposed to stay that way, but it didn't. She left us only around 19 o'clock in the evening and me with an order back. She would like to have a record player. Now she knows my system and has actually never let go of a comment, except, quite well....

But yesterday she hardly wanted to believe it. Thanks to Spotify, many of her favorite tracks could be played and some I had on vinyl, which really impressed her.

Her system has long been a Naim preamp 32.5 with 140 power amp and Tukan. A Bluetooth receiver serves as the source.

I had been thinking of a Thorens TD160MKII or a Lenco L75. Both players are cheap to buy used, may need some care, but should run well. A cheap phono stage would also be needed and possibly a new cartridge.

Since we have an obvious Lenco specialist (Arjen) as a user, his comments would be appreciated, as would others as well. Am therefore also open to recommendations in other directions.

I put together the following for my eldest two, and they are both very happy with them:

Dual CS-505-IV with AT VMN95e, Arcam Alpha 7 Amp, Linn Index speakers

The Dual is cheap and v easy to live with and is robust and fun, but not really amenable to tuning.

I use a Linn Axis with Akito and AT VMN95e, so also consider that a v enjoyable option.

I haven't listened to the Thorens or Lenco so can't compare.

Obviously a enjoyable experience. Been through the same process and stared with a Linn Basik. Did compare this with Thorens 166 or 160 (can't remember), Regar RP3 with upgraded PSU. Noen was as musical as the Basik.
For a more limited budget the as by others mentioned Dual is also quite engaging and has practical features.

I’d rather see my kids enjoying a wider range of music via a nice streaming system.

I think the current obsession with vinyl by the young is a passing fad. New records are very expensive and used records are a crap-shoot (who wants to listen through clicks and pops and scrapes). Most importantly, most of the younger generation have the attention span of a gnat and the audio discrimination of a goat! Forgive my bluntness but Spotify and the like and MP3s are just perfect for them.

If you do buckle to the pressure, get a cheap turntable with an even cheaper moving magnet cartridge (I'll give the stylus a week at best)!

I built both a streamer and a turntable for my son. At the end of last year the streamer stopped playing on one channel. I offered to help him figure out the problem, but his response was "Don't worry, we've just bought more vinyls so we'll play them instead"

Thanks very much. I'll take a closer look at the Dual. Could be a good recommendation.

My kids aren't teenagers who succumb to a fashion trend. They know exactly how to get their music. The daughter now also vinyl. She gets some of my double-collected albums as a starter package

Hermann, a refurbished and upgradend Lenco would-be be a nice choice. I’ll send you a PM.

Here's a Linn Basik, that looks decent: https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anz ... 2-172-2109
Fit a new AT VM95 of your choice and you're good to go.

A used Rega Planar 2 or 3 would also be good options. They have been around almost 50 years and tend to hold up well. If you can find one with the made in England Rega arm that is a better bet. The S shaped arms made by Acos Lustre are not as musical and the anti skating setup sometimes fails and is rather difficult to fix. Linn Basik would be even more musical but at least in the US are much harder to find. Axis I would be careful about. The power supplies in them quite often fail at this age and generally can't be reliably repaired (neither Class A audio repair nor I will touch them). Also many of them had Akito 1 arms which fail more than any other Linn arm - I'd say about 50% of them have bad bearings. So the Axis is a risky proposition.

I bought a 1990’s vintage Rega Planar 2 with the green logo and markings on the counter weight for my daughter. Made the most sense to me at the time. Sitting in storage now.

Regarding th Axis. I have two, and have sold 3 recently as people don't know what it is and sell them from 150 to 250 Euro in Denmark and Norway.
One was dead and I had all the cpas changed at local old-fashioned repair shop for 150 Euro. All good.
None have wrapped top plate but a good clean and use of high pressure air to get rid of old dust on circuit board, a bit of oil in the center of the motor, new oil, belt and torque on circuitboard, arm colar, etc does the trick. A fantastic player for pocket money.
I see them often around 5-700 euro as well at which I would treasure myself for the PSU being good.
Comment on Akito 1 arm is equally valid for Basic which also came with Akito 1.

In Germany one often get the local pick-up deals quite good for both the Basic and the Axis.

An interesting idea from Rega may well be perfect for you .. I forget the exact name, but something along the lines of "Green Series".

The idea is that they are now marketing a range of turntables, functionally perfect, but with slight cosmetic imperfections, all manufacturer warranted, but appropriately discounted. A bit like the fad in supermarkets for "ugly" vegetables.

I must confess to thinking what a refreshing idea!! 🤔

It's one of the cheapest Axises I've seen in Germany for a while and I don't think the bearings of the Basik Plus arm are as sensitive as those of the first Akito. The Ortofon is usable too, but I would probably fit an Audio Technica AT-VM95E.
I would definitely check it out.

The question remains about a MM phono amplifier. A Slipstick 7 is currently on offer for 700 EUR, which is not justified considering the price of the Axis. Maybe someone has information about cheaper but good Phono MM amplifiers?

This Lejonklou Kinki could go cheaply, now at SEK 2.000,- (€ 175,-)

Or maybe a Rega Fono MM or Cambridge Audio Solo?

Thanks to you, a really good offer. On the other hand, I am in contact with Marco, who offers some very interesting phonos.

The Axis has been purchased. That's the page. The other one is much more pleasant because we met two people who also described a very important person in their lives who was also very important to us. Amazing parallels emerge as both regularly exhibit at major vinyl trade fairs abroad. Likewise, our musical tastes seem to be similar. So not only a success for my daughter, but also for the new contact.

The Ortofon VM seems very good, but will consider the AT. Actually, I don't really like it because I have to install a pickup again according to the old custom and the last time I installed it with only 2 screws was over 30 years ago.

Hopefully the Axis will play with a Fredrik phono. My daughter's system is a Naim 32.5 with 140 on a mana rack and the little Tukan but initially tested with 72/140 Tukan and Keiligh.

I'm using an Axis with Kinki3 and AT VM95E. It's very enjoyable.

My daughter will hear her Linn Axis for the first time on Saturday.

It was quite cheap and unfortunately doesn't spin at 45rpm. In addition, the anti-scatting appears to be defective, as it immediately sprints to zero with the slightest touch. It is difficult to leave the value at 1.5.

Three examples with different tables. Equipped with a Basis Plus and Ortofon VM, but listen for yourself.
(At the beginning a loud pop can be heard in two recordings. Maybe don't start quite as loudly)
