Katalyst and RCA attenuators

Post by Matteo »

Hi

Has someone recently tried RCA attenuators between a Kat DSM and the power amp?

My listening volume range is 55-65; with a -15db attenuator I could get closer to 75-80, which seems the range in which the DVC works better.

The Rothwell attenuators (RCA/XLR - http://www.rothwellaudioproducts.co.uk/ ... ators.html) come in various versions (-10db, -15db ...).

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi Matteo,
didn't try myself but found a report from a serious guy on another forum:

"Today I received and discarded the Rothwell -10 dB inline XLR attenuators as they clearly degrade the sound. So I prefer playing without them at -25 dB than with them at -15 dB."

Hope it helps
Matt

Hi Mateo,

You can do that in your Linn account, general page, volume offsets (up to -15). Worth it with my ADSM and also exaktbox, both kat. Hopefully this can be done with your KDSM.

Let us know.

Thanks to everybody.

I tried the volume offset (- 15db) in my Linn Account Manager on both speakers (the volume range is now close to 80) but frankly I didn't ear any improvement in musicality.

The offset can be apply also to the headphones out and to some sources (but strangely not to the radio and the "playlist" input, that is the name of Qobuz and the Nas on the ADSM).

Hi Matteo,

I expected that would be the case. One can imagine that the DVC is a lot better in the KDSM than in the Akurate versions, but good to hear (read) it. I guess you just can forget about attenuators then.

Doesn’t this volume offset operate with the DVC?

In other words, the only thing that changes is the number on the display.

I don’t know.

But in this case the volume offset seems useless…
