Munich show 2022

Post by Ianw »

There were rumours going around that Linn were about to introduce new equipment at this show but have heard nothing.

Anyone clued up?

Next year is the 50th anniversary. This announcement is due in a period measured in a time shorter than months. But it is LP12 related.

OK.

Let’s consider: recent upgrades are mostly under the bonnet, bearing and Radikal 2. New cart per the Ekstatik. So what’s left?

Top-plate and pickup arm both issued together? Top-plate utilising new machining centre.

New machined plinth with integral top-plate (again utilising new machining centre)?

There's been talk of a new arm for a while but could just be hot air / wishful thinking.

Last two upgrades were for Klimax LP12. Will these be as well???

The short listening I had was a muddled lifeless performance.
I left in a hurry.

Most interesting was their rack which is written more about on PFM

When I was in the room the LP12 was playing, sitting on a different (single) table.

I don't have the impression that this rack is optimised for audio performance

I simply posted the link in response to Matteo's question. I deliberately did not speculate on the performance of the rack. I was curious to see what it looked like following PerFlemming's post - having seen it, it's not to my taste, visually, but I have no idea how it sounds musically. I'd be more interested to know Linn's criteria for selecting it, beyond looks, if there were any, but that's on Linn, not the rack.

In Munich every shelve was different. So if this rack has an impact, it‘s not easy to make an A/B/C-comparison of KDSM/2 Katalyst, KDSM/2 Organik and KDSM/3 Organik on different shelves

From a source first point of view, with a digital source and solid state amplification, where does the rack sit in the hierachy?

IIRC, there are reports on this forum here that an Akurate DS on a Harmonihyllan rack outperforms a Klimax DS on another rack, so the rack might have a high ranking in the hierarchy.

So - if we proceed with the hypothesis of source first. Plus the hypothesis that the rack is somewhere around the source in terms of the hierachy. What would we expect to happen if we moved our solid state amplifiers from the rack to the floor? Or from the rack to the worst possible support we have in our homes? For example a pile of books or magazines? Or an empty cardboard box?

And what actually happens in your system when you do such a listening test?

I know what's happened in my systems when I've moved solid state sources and amplifiers between different suports or no support at all (the floor).

I’ve done this many times and the results vary from “not much” to “significant change”. Note that a significant change could relate to better/worse musical fidelity and/or better/worse sound fidelity.

As for where a rack/support sits in the hierarchy I’d say that it’s possibly just about the most important element in a HiFi system. We know how influential the source component can be, but at the same time, the same source component can vary in its performance based on the surface on which it’s placed. So the support, to some degree, dictates the level at which the source component can perform. The way I think about racks and supports is that they combine with the HiFi component to form a symbiotic sub-system, with the support providing 55% of the performance and the component the other 45%, or something of that ilk.

PS good doesn’t mean expensive. The humble Lac table can perform quite well. At the other end of the scale, the Quadraspire bronze spikes can work quite well too.
