SRA

Post by Mikeg »

Which is the right way to measure stylus rake angle and does it matter?

I ask because I was watching an Ortofon You Tube video on cartridge setup and noticed their way of measuring SRA appears different to others I have seen.

Hi Mike,
Just as option, you can adjust it with listening, using Tune Method.
From parallel (TA and Record) go up and down ...
Good Luck!

I can't see that it matters in practice, as you need to adjust VTA by ear.

Yep. Adjust by ear only. The SRA varies from cartridge to cartridge, even when the SRA is specified the same. Also, the cutting angle varies from lathe to lathe, depending on how well it was set up, so make sure you use a few albums to set your arm, Roy Gandhi of Rega recommends setting the arm parallel to the record and forgetting about it.

You can really only find a happy average due to varying LP thicknesss, optimum SRA/VTA on a common 120g Lp pressing will be different than on a 200g LP and so on, so you may want to internally adjust by ear with this in mind, -as well as tracking weight and bias/anti-skate FWIW. ...Some had had luck using thinner and thicker felt mats depending on the album, Replacement Linn and Rega felt mats have varied here and there years, I own a few different thicknesses myself, but also keep in mind that different mat thicknesses will also take on other different characteristics, the new white Raga p10 mat -for example- is quite thin on average.
Rega P10, Aphelion II, Aura. Naim CB 32.5/HC, Naxo 3-6/HC, 3x250 into K20/DMS.
