JBL 308P and 708P

Well, patience has paid off and I’ve finally located and purchased a pair of 708p in great shape at a decent price. I think (am also hopin) this will be the last speaker I ever want. Just soo many greats things have been said about these with absolutely minimal negative remarks. Eta 3-4 days!!

Looking forward to your report! Still waiting for my new pair hahaha apparently they are still "available". But I'm on the second year of waiting...

I'll just post a link from a speaker stand I just found. Look almost like the old Kan stands. I find the available heights remarkable, nine in number. He could be a choice for the JBLs.

did anyone of you tried torques on the 308?

I ended up with my last „torque session“ at around 0.4Nm plus 5 notches I would like to know if someone also tried torques on the bass/mid chassis and ended up the same region.

I can't find my notes on this but I did try it when I had them and I remember it being somewhere near/over .4Nm.

I did not get inside the units and I don't recall doing the back plate. I recommend being careful and not going too high as the screws go directly into particle board.

I've spent a week auditioning a pair of Kali IN-8 V2 loudspeakers designed by Sprinkle, one of the designers of the JBL LSR 308P and the 708P.

The Kali email correspondence suggested the following:

"Regarding the LSR 708P, we’re working on a hi-fi studio system in that price range, but in the mean time the IN-8V2s are incredible coaxial monitors that punch far above their price range, and I would argue are at the very least in the same league as the 708Ps."

Bold words from a designer associated with the JBL LSR 708P and Kali IN-8 V2.

My experience with the Kali's is that there's no difference in musicality between them and the JBL LSR 308P but there's an increase in small details within the music. They're hugely enjoyable loudspeakers. It's unfortunate I've not heard clip comparisons between the 708P and the 308P. If I didn't own and enjoy a pair of JBL LSR 308Ps, I'd retain the Kali's.

My system is 2.2 with a JBL SW and another SW.

JBL has a series of speakers designed to mimic the look of their older studio series. They are in basic rectangular boxes that are available in dark walnut with a blue front as well as all black. They are all passive two way speakers featuring the newer JBL horn design for the tweeter. The models are the 4309 with a 6.5" woofer, the 4349 with a 12" woofer and the 4367 with a 15" woofer. Bass extension, power handling, cabinet size and efficiency all increase along with the woofer size, as does price, of course. I have seen some reviews but haven't heard them myself. I'm wondering if anyone here has heard them and if they are a consideration in comparison the something like the 708? I'm sure the TM3s would drive the living daylights out of them and it would be nice to have a highly recommendable passive speaker. I'm quite happy with my setup but I hardly own a speaker that is easily recommended to others. It feels like there is a gap since the demise of the 3677, which made several people very happy over here.

These clips do a great job of demonstrating the importance of making sure the 308s (or indeed anything) are optimally set up when auditioning. It may be tempting to try the JBLs with a cheap cable or RCA-XLR adaptor (especially considering a properly made set of Linn Blacks will cost as much as the speakers*), but doing so will significantly curtail their performance and a listener auditioning them under such compromised conditions will never experience their true musical capabilities. Keep in mind that despite the fact that the cables attach to the speakers, they are not speaker cables. The JBLs are self powered so these cables are connecting the preamp to the power amp, much higher up the hierarchy than speaker cables and therefore of greater importance to maintaining the system's musical integrity.


*This is more a testament to how cheap the LSR308P is on the used market, not how expensive proper cables for them are.
