Linn Linto Mk1 vs Mk2

Post by Allan3630 »

Does anyone know what improvements/changes were made with the Linto Mk2 over Mk1. I have been surfing for days and cannot find any information other than a spec sheet for what I assume is the original Mk1.

was there ever an MKII with the Linto?
I thought also there was two versions but got corrected it was related to the Lingo II where there was a version with normal electronic circuit MK1 and later a version with surface mounted circuit the MK2

As far as I am aware there was only ever one version of the Linto.

You asking about the Lingo II perhaps?

No I am asking about the Linto. I am looking at one for sale that is labelled as Mk2. The seller claims that there are improvements with capacitors and filters.

The only two versions of the Linto I am aware of, are the standard and the Anniversary models. After a quick google, I do see a couple advertised as MK2, but there is nothing to identify them as such on the base and nothing in Linndocs. Perhaps an email to Linn with the serial number would clear things up.

Sorry to digress but have been wondering this for a while. Common knowledge of the benefits of recapping early lingo. Is there any experience of having a Linto recapped? I thoroughly enjoy mine and would like to keep it in condition for many years to come.

Michael in Lyric would be the man to speak with. I believe Linn supported the Linto up to a couple of years ago and may well still do.

Strangely enough, so was I! Was picking up an upgrade for the tt. It’s David by the bye.

Odd question. Are you the same discodave of marine keeping?

Hi all,
Have communicated with Linn and there are indeed 2 versions of the Linto.

"The serial number of the Lingo power supply you have quoted was manufactured in February 2007 and is indeed a Lingo 2 version. The difference between the Lingo and Lingo 2 is that the Lingo 2 was upgraded with surface mount circuitry which offers a sonic improvement over the original Lingo."

Allan3630, the Linto is a MC phono amp but the Lingo is a power supply for the old Sondek AC motor!

You have to keep these items apart! :-)

yes, good point,
This was the response from Linn helpline. I asked about the Linto and gave the serial number of the Linto I was looking at. I will have to ask them again.

Nor is it strictly correct - if even for a Lingo 2. All Lingo 2s are in the full size LK box but some of the early ones have exactly the same cards as in the last of the ;shoebox' sized cases.Asfar as I can tell there are no surface mount parts on the L1 boards.

I was never aware of there being more than one official version of the Linto. I always just considered mine a 'Linto'.

2nd response from Linn says there is only one version of the Linto so you were right!
I guess the Mk2 being sold is a home-grown upgrade :-)

I am glad I checked as the seller is asking ~150Euro more than other Lintos on the market.

Well, you got there eventually. On the Lingo, only a Lingo with the surface mount board was correctly called the Lingo 2. The through hole boards in the larger cases are still considered Lingo 1s (maybe think of them as 1.5s). Lingo 1s have started going bad, as Valhallas have been doing for a while. They can be recapped to bring them back to original performance. I have also had a couple customers who had Lingo 1s that were still working but decided to recap them to keep them that way. Both felt it was musically better after I rebuilt them. I haven't heard of anyone needing recapping on a Linto but I also haven't tried to do it. Linto's don't seem to be as susceptible to caps failing as Lingos and I can only recall seeing one unit that had actually failed, which was repaired elsewhere.
