New LP12 part (rumors)

Post by Matteo »

I just read on WigWam that Linn is going to announce a new LP12 part (top plate? Radikal 2? ...).

Only rumors?

Haven't seen that. Was it a "wish list" item?

Can't open the link, do we have to be a registered member to have access? In any case, if the new Linn part is a legitimate upgrade...I'm in 100%!

Cheers!

"finally got hold of the dealer. We had a good conversation as usual. He advised that I hold out for the next Linn promotion, which should be announced in February, to commence in March. Perhaps a new LP12 component (top plate) will be introduced with a packaged discount being offered. [...] There has been no talk of a new Radikal other than speculation. Nothing concrete has happened. Apparently, Linn's focus has been on production rather than R&D".

Thanks for the data Matteo :-) I always thought that Linn could improve their top plate, but that was just my opinion though.

Cheers!

I think these are just speculation on the part of a WAM member. Looks like the only thing the dealer said was look out for another promotion(?)

I feel that the pandemic has temped many customers to push the button on new purchases e.g. unspent funds for holidays and increased time at home..... seems to have resulted in increased lead time for new equipment. Combine the healthy order book with a squeeze on component supply due to pandemic only adds to lead time. Would this lead to no Summer deals this year?

Seems reasonable to me that the design gestation period for quality new developments of equipment means that anything new would have been in development before Covid, so not a response to the pandemic situation.

The big uptake on Karousel sales seems to have been a big success for Linn and dealers. A new top plate wouldn’t depend on electronic component availability, rather more related to mechanical equipment fabrication facilities already available in the factory.

Just speculation on my part.

We need a new Trampolin, which foot doesn’t touch the Radikal motor case.

As a non-LP12-owner I have no shares in this, but would a bug fix really count as an upgrade? I hope there’s more in store for you all ;)

Re: New LP12 part (rumors)

I currently have four LP12 customers who have either pulled the trigger or who are about to. So I was concerned when I read that post, especially since it takes 4-6 weeks to get an LP12 and one of the units may involve a 4+ hour drive each way down to and back from to the customer. Not a situation where I want to find out about a new upgrade a few weeks after I have delivered them. I'm pretty sure I know who the dealer in question is and they are generally pretty well informed. So I took it seriously and contacted my Linn rep. I was assured that there was nothing new coming out for the LP12 in the immediate future. He mentioned that they came out with the Karousel less than a year ago and it has been a huge upgrade and a big success and that they had to update the Majik LP12 in November due to Jelco shutting down and having to source a different arm. So they have been busy on the LP12 and could be excused for sitting back and relaxing a bit. That said we do know they are looking at other ways to improve the LP12 and its components, and I know they have done research on an even better cartridge than the Kandid (but one that would cost a lot more), but I have no idea what will see the light of day or when.

Good afternoon Thomas,

Does that mean if Linn makes a better (and more expensive) cartridge than the Kandid, it will replace the Kandid? And that could leave some people having to get the Krystal cartridge instead. But certainly exciting in any case, I would be up for getting a better sounding moving coil cartridge!

Cheers!

From the horse's mouth (ThomasOK on the WAM):

"I checked into this and was informed by our Linn rep that there are currently no changes afoot for the LP12 at present. I was told not to expect any new upgrades for the LP12 in the immediate future as they just did the large upgrade of the Karousel under a year ago and the forced upgrade to the Majik LP12 in November."

No, it's just down temporarily.

With the LP12's 50th birthday next year and people still upgrading to the Karousel, doesn't it make more sense for them to do something in 2022?

Except that they consider the 50th birthday to be in 2023, as they had the 45th birthday in 2018. I believe that Linn was incorporated in 1973 so they date it from there.
