The Emperor’s New Clothes

Post by beck »

I keep thinking of this fairy tale when using my ipad making video clips of my system.

At first you do not quite believe what these recordings “show” you about the sound your system produces.

But when you start working in the frame of the sound it can record you discover a whole new world and in the end you can capture and recreate the music that has been lost along the way from the studio to your ears at home in front of your hifi system (using the recordings as a guiding tool).

This seemingly low quality recording equipment can in the right hands be the boy that points at the Emperor and shouts : “He has no clothes on!”.

It has given me personally a whole new understanding of things such as analog, digital, digital remastering, SO used by Linn and more.

The recordings of our systems can indeed be very illuminating beck, particularly when we’re trying to home in on a sweet spot which involves making many changes which can take a while to perform. One that comes to mind for me is listening to different power cable lengths. Each change took about 35 - 45 mins (allowing 30 mins for the system to warm up again), and without having recordings I could instantly compare, the whole process would have taken considerably longer than the 2 years it took me!

I’d be interested in knowing more about your understandings now re: digital, analog and SO. The reason I ask is that they are three subjects I’m still trying to get to terms with, after over 40 years of messing about with HiFi!

You are welcome to send me pm but you will only get one opinion among a sea of others.

The best would be to compare clips of some kind so people can make up their own mind.

A personal view I would like to share is this:

When you gain something you loose something else. Like human evolution the abilities we gain have left other abilities behind.
