Yeah, I read this a few weeks back and it confirmed my decision to stay away from all remastered reissues.
Really strange that they managed to keep it an almost secret that long...

Wow, I hadn't heard about this. Gee, I'm so glad to hear they had digital "backups" of all that stuff. This way they can still sell the files even if much of the true musical value has been lost. Sounds like a win-lose situation to me. Universal wins the ability to keep selling these files like nothing happened and music lovers lose any shot at a really fulfilling re-release. No surprise so many re-releases are unsatisfactory.
