Radikal speed problem

My Radikal have all of a sudden started spinning in wrong speed.
In the middle of a song it speeded up and the red diode lit up stronger. Now after turning it off and on, done the reset it still won’t spin at correct speed and the diod don’t dim down.
Any suggestions how to fix this?

Oh no.

1. Borrow another Radikal unit and check whether the problem remains.
2. If it remains, your motor is likely faulty.

Thx for the lightning fast reply Fredrik!
I’ll contact Tonläget and se if Anders can sort it out.

Trevlig midsommar!

I’ve heard this sometimes happens when the LP12 is left on spinning for a long period like 24 hours.

Sometimes resolved by doing the reset as you have done, follows by repeated on and off switching; eventually the deck calibrates and the LEDs fade. Almost as if the speed controller needs a few starts to get it’s reference back.

Worth a try?

Interested as to how you get on with the eventual fix, whatever that is, so please keep us posted?

This happened on side “c” of R.H.C.P’s “Blood Sugar Sex Magik“ and had not been on for about two days prior to this.
I’ll report back!

Visited Tonläget today with my radikal and it seems to work. Hope I have time tomorrow and take my LP12 there and see if Anders can locate the problem.

I’ll be back!

The LP12 plays since about 1978 in my stereos. Each LP12 was turning for years. Only with belt change or new Cart it was switched off.

For the current Klimax (Accurate Radikal) for some reason I changed my behavior and turned it off all the time.

But since a week the LP12 keeps running and currently I play records about 12 hours a day. Such an error has not yet occurred.

Today we checked my Lp12, swapped sensor, outer platter and with another Radikal all with no luck.

To be continued...

So all that’s remaining in the loop is the motor?

Keep us posted please.

It certainly sounds like you have a problem with the motor.

By the way Hermann, you may have started turning it off because that is what Linn recommended when they released it. The AC motors last several decades with minimal wear and can be left on all the time without concern. Also a replacement is about $235US. The Radikal motor is designed to last 20 to 30 years of normal use but that is with turning it off in between uses. It is a brushed DC motor and the brushes will eventually wear out. Linn made them out of precious metal so they would last for at least a couple of decades, but I wouldn't want to leave my Radikal on all the time and shorten their life substantially. Especially as a replacement Radikal motor is basically $1400US!

Well, Tom, Linns recommendation was the reason I've done that. Of course, I'll turn it off between listening session again. Thanks for the hint regarding mot livetime and costs.

Most likely motor or some cable error.
My Radikal have always been powered on, but the LP12 (motor) only on when playing records.

That's the way I do it too. Radikal box powered up all the time (except when I'm away on vacation) and the motor powered up when I'm going to play records.

Well I guess something good with this is that my wife asked why it plays so bad and flat now.
Linn basik with 9cc and at95 chromecast audio as sources now, moving to a new place on Friday so apart from the Radikal problem most stuff are in boxes

Noted.
Just a thought:

Bearing and oil OK?

Inner platter, motor pulley and belt all clean?

I remember a circus upgrade long time ago. The plate bearing was too tightly tolerated. The result was a slightly jumping / wriggling turntable after a spinning time of 2-3 days. The plate bearing was replaced and the mistake disappeared.

The Radikal-kit have been sent to Linn for further investigation and now vacation coming here in Sweden, so it’s some 4 weeks before anything happens in my end.

Finaly got my Radikal back!
Faulty motor changed under warranty. Anders at Tonläget reinstalled it today and adjusted my LP12 at the same time and again he commented “Never heard an akito1 play this good” :)

Thank you Anders for excellent service!

Think I not leaving my music room until work tomorrow...

Thx!

Feels really good to have the Lp12 up and running again. Spent 2-8h every day playing records:)
We just moved to a new place and Our new neighbour (who have naim) came over yesterday day with a bunch of records, so I have some listening to look forward to!
