Recommendations for wireless headset?

Post by bonzo »

So I’d really like the ability to listen to music without the rest of the house having to listen. My listening position is about 12’ from components. Is there a product I can get that allows wireless (simply don’t want to run a 12-15 foot cord across room). Also do I need to get a headphone amp? Ideally I’d like a low cost solution with as few boxes and wires as possible. I hope that made sense. Thanks all!

Do you want to listen to anything you play on the main system, LP12, streamer, etc. or just music of an iPhone or similar device?

bonzo,
Your question is ridiculous. I live in a 6500 square foot home and would love the very slight inconvenience of being so close as to need wireless play-back versus hard-wired.

There is no such thing as a Bluetooth anything sounding better than a hard-wired anything. A cheap hard-wired cable will always sound better than anything wireless. Anything.

I have a set of direct-connected Kans rigged alongside a Lazy-boy that I use to occasionally fall asleep to in order to keep the sound as low as possible in my house. No one else but me in the house can hear that sound late at night.

Why spend more money to sound worse?

I would suggest an analog rf wireless headphone. My linn dealer (tonlaget.com) was quite happy with this a few years ago but the model is probably not sold anymore.

It was not these but something similar (maybe akg)

wireless headset?????????????... or whaaat?

bonzo,
Yes, you will need a headphone amp in addition to a Bluetooth or FM broadcaster.

Using tune-dem as the standard, I have found the better Bluetooth headphones sound much better than FM types. I threw out an old Koss system as it was the worst sound I've ever heard in my life. The AKG recommended to me was decent but was bettered by several Bluetooth models.

I was still dissatisfied and got radical in my approach. I bought a used Apple Mac Mini computer for eighty dollars. I connected my phono amp direct into the Mini via an adapter cord. Then I used AirPlay (Apples' wireless protocol) to send the music to my iPhoneSE and iPod touch, then into my favorite headphones, Grado SR60. It was much better than I expected and far better than anything Bluetooth or FM. I later found several Mac settings to improve the sound. One was increasing input volume to reduce noise, and another was eliminating unused programs running to dedicate resources to AirPlay.

As I mentioned in my post above, I live in a very large home. I listened occasionally via headphones at night but most of my listening was from records which were not yet on Spotify or elsewhere. I now don't use headphones at all at home anymore. I do use them very often at work. I bought a used Naim Headline/SLIC/HiCap after setting up my Mac Mini system and it was better than the wireless headphone set-up I had.

I used an old 20 foot coiled extension cable to connect my Grados to the Headline. I'm sure you can find similar. If you are not chasing trees for the leaves, look no further and just buy an extension cord along with a good headphone amp. If you want to keep chasing, buy, and buy, and buy,.... ...how important, and why, is it to you to not have a cord 12 feet away?

A Linn Kandid phono cartridge costs over $5 per hour to run. I ran two turntables for many years. The second was much cheaper to play my new buys which often were 25 cent records. I personally would never spend $5 per hour to play back my LP12 wirelessly over headphones. It is utterly ridiculous especially since it sounds far worse.

I have much more to say regarding this thread but will refrain. My general experience is never underestimate the unexpected. Lejonklou has taught me to never expect the unexpected!

I recommend you listen to the best wireless headphones. Then try my Mac mini advice. Then try any direct wired advice. You must value in cost per hour.
