with my own words: the intention what to search for in an experiment influences the outcome
its more than just expectation bias - your intention influences what you find

science is only what we agree to know by now

Take out your headphones and listen. "If it sounds better it is better". Tune Dem and and foot tapping is all for Linn. A bit nasty of Linn maybe to target Naim so diretly, but that is what the market is all about - competition.

I find the Naim better focused both with tune and timing. I find the Linn “spread out” both with tune and timing.

My pick would be the Naim even if “less” sound is presented by it for the listener to hear. To me the Naim Unity present a kind of Linn Kan sound.

I think I would get tired of the Select sound after a while. Just my opinion of course!

Have to agree with beck: more sound with the Linn; more music with the Naim.
Not impressed either by the salesman jumping in to talk up the Selekt immediately after one play to direct the audience on what they were meant to have heard, soundwise...

Also prefer Naim. I found the first track enjoyable on the Naim and somehow deconstructed on the Linn, like something that was taken apart and not fitted back together properly. It’s like music vs HiFi for me.

You are joking, right?

Listen to the tune that the piano is playing...

On the Naim, it’s not a tune. That’s just through my iPad speakers.

Interesting!

It appears as if the Linn handles the bass better, but also fragments the music (what I call digital distortion) in an annoying way. Lots of sounds flying around.

And the Space Optimisation in the end left me cold - once again. With less bass and even more fragmented, all I can think is "fireworks".

EDIT: I listened again, this time with some more focus.
In the first clip, I think Naim wins although it's got heavy feet. The Linn I find very restless.

In the second clip I can't pick, both are just too bad. Naim is muddy, bloated, distorted. Linn is confused, the opposite of homogenic.

Third I find difficult as well, Naim makes a little more sense musically, but it feels heavy and old. Linn makes impressive sounds that all seem just a tad wrong in time.

Fourth, well I already said what I thought there. Mashed up and glued together even more. Like a mirror with a million tiny cracks in it.

I'd really appreciate some more opinions on that set of comparisons Robert Lake posted.

Why? Because I suspect that while everyone hears the difference in sound character, some of you will be totally unbothered by what beck labels "tune and timing spread out", Charlie "deconstructed" and I "fragmented".

Am I right?

I've just listened. Which do I prefer? None.... because to me they don't spark any interest in the music. Given a choice between these systems, I'd spend my money on a good holiday.

beck's, Charlie1's, and your description(s) match what I hear. The Linn 'sounds' more impressive than the Naim but the Selekt is more musically disjointed .. awkward - count me as bothered.

If I can be bothered, I'll listen later. These systems hold absolutely zero interest for me and the only reason I'll maybe have a listen is to see if I agree with your points.
I must edit this in... Currently having a blast playing some killer tunes loud.... Currently on the Spotify play list is the album 'full circle' by Great White. OK, no jack Russell on vocals but it's killer!
So I'm not interrupting things to listen to some clips.

I would go with David's statement as well, kind of relief as the "music" ended.

I listened to the clip on my iPhone in my car waiting for the MOT. When the first Selekt clip started I totally lost interest and found my self turning the gear knob so the TVR logo was in the right direktion...
The last one with space on was totataly “dead”, took the last of anything away.
Must say I’m little disappointed, usually when listening to clips in the playground thread I’m ending up buying a record since it’s so good!

My reply above didn't answer Fredrik's question about whether a lot of us would be "unbothered" by what he and others had heard - I'm "bothered". I would be much more bothered if Linn was realistically or potentially my future rather than (LP12 excepted) my past. As it is, I'd suggest that a Hakai and Boazu should murder those integrated systems for musicality.

Depressing video!
First, to talk badly about competitors products isn't good form imho.
Then, just talk about the sound, clearer etc.
Finally, a demo when the presentor tell the outcome THEN aske the

I remember when Linn was all about the music and musical understanding.

Yes, the Naim is more musical, and yes the SO mess things up.
Strangely the Katalyst wasn't any better really. In the KDS, its a cracker!

Totally agree with you ML.
Never good to use someone else’s product as a punching bag.
Top that with only talking about how it sounds just made it worse!

Maybe the installation in the clip was far from well tuned to start with?
I have listened to the entry level select dsm, and it was not as bad as in the clip.
With SO “On” it kind of killed the music, it was only one quick a-a-b with one song.

My Akurate DSM/3 Katalyst sounds way better than both the Naim and the Selekt and SO is on.
