Just simple math :)

LP12 mkII = LP12 +1 = LP 1+1, 2+1 = LP23

There is a single HDMI ARC input socket on the base model as far as I can see?

Also a strange looking USB IN socket?

Linn shut their forum down for a new dsm that looks like an xbox? Really? Surely there's much more to come.

So we already have a review (https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/linn-selekt-dsm) and prices (http://www.the-ear.net/news/linn-selekt-dsm).
Donald wrote: Also a strange looking USB IN socket?
Yes. This means it can be used as a USB DAC too, if you'd like to use it in conjunction with external USB source (PC/Mac or some specialized device like Aurender).
Though I don't really understand why one need a USB input while there is an outstanding onboard streamer. Anyway it's great to have a choice.

From 1st October 2018, the line-up will purely comprise the DSM models (now Majik DSM, Selekt DSM, Akurate DSM and Klimax DSM) that were introduced in 2011 and added a preamp section with digital and analogue connections to the original (and soon-to-be ditched) DS models.
That'll cut off the market for those customers who just want a Linn DS as their digital streaming source in an otherwise non-Linn system (or still sticking with their Kontrol). Perhaps it wasn't that big a market anyway, but it looks like it's "our way, or the highway"

Not exactly, given that the Selekt comes in four versions, with or without power amplification and Katalyst (that'll give us lots of fun with nomenclature when we get the Linn forum back). As regards use of a separate pre-amplifier, that ship sailed when LInn discontinued the Klimax Kontrol in 2015.

Where the Selekt does seem to make meagre provision is in outputs. No XLR or RCA out (so no option to use separate power amplification) on the models with power amplifiers. And the only digital output is the Exakt link, so no SPDIF out or HDMI pass though, and no provision for headphones at all. There's clearly some thought gone into the design, so, for the moment at least, we have to assume that Linn know what they're doing. Selekt does not look to me like an enthusiast product, though, dependent on price, it mike be what I'm looking for to use in my study.

"Next year Linn will also make available a headphone amplifier cartridge, and those with an amplified Selekt DSM will have the choice to add a surround sound cartridge with 5.1 speaker terminals, 4 HDMI inputs, 1 HDMI output and playback support for DTS and Dolby Digital Plus audio formats."

David, for your study you can have: -

Selekt DSM£4,000
Selekt DSM w/ integrated power amp £5,250
Selekt DSM w/ Katalyst £5,500
Selekt DSM w/ integrated amp and Katalyst £6,750

I bet the Katalyst cartridge comes with RCA or XLR outputs. See the picutre of the opened Selekt on https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/linn-selekt-dsm - there are those extra modules visible. It seems you can install Katalyst and the internal amp at the same time.

My comment was in response to the announcement to discontinue the DS range and only sell DSM's, rather than anything Selekt specific. Many customers are happy, or even prefer, maintaining separate sources and pre-amp.

Well, not everyone got on-board

... and, as I said earlier, the Klimax DS sounds (did sound?) better to me than the Klimax DSM.

Its great that Linn will finally offer surround decoding again, but I hope the supported audio formats is a typo. Where are Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD? Why would I only want ancient poorer quality decoding?

I assume that the new, web based, SO will become available in October and not before? Certainly no sign of it today.

So they do. My point was that Selekt can be seen as part of a trend that Linn have been pursuing for some time, in which the streamer so to speak 'absorbs' the pre-amplifier. That trend is is itself closely related to the tendency to handle in the digital domain parts of the signal chain that were formerly analogue only, a process that started as long ago as 2012 with the Kiko. Obviously, the change is not universally beloved - though I am very happy with my 'mixed economy' Exakt system - but with products such as the Urika II, Linn have firmly committed themselves to that path

Nor they did, any more than when Linn stopped making CD players in 2009. Like any company, Linn has to choose which options it offers. Inevitably, some people will feel that it got some or all of those decisions wrong. Linn are still in business, so presumably they know by now which hits they can sensibly take.

A bunch of us all heard the same thing at our 'Premier Inn Squad' factory visit last year (where both were used with DVC enabled and directly driving an analogue system); on the tune that they chose to use for that brief comparison, the magnitude of the difference was - to my ears - actually a little bit surprising.

I wonder that the reason for dropping the ‘DS’ versions was to free up production resources at the factory in order to commence production of the new Selekt; especially if the majority of customers were opting for DSM’s whether Klimax or Akurate versions.

I note that the new version of Space Optimisation is to be offered to all Linn Streamers made since 2007 or 2008 but that this will be on the Cloud rather than downloaded to a PC or Apple Mac device.

Interestingly my dealer has just emailed re the Selekt and upcoming demo’s. What is more interesting is that they are putting their demo pair of Klimax Exakt 350’s up for sale - I have never known them to sell demo items unless a new or replacement version is expected ... but maybe I am wrong?

^^^ New, more processor intensive, version of Exakt possibly? To be called Exakter, no doubt :-) Would explain what the "upgrades" are.

Sounds more like the current DSM software that only accepts decoded surround, the argument being that decoding adds specialist chips that quickly become obsolete and add licensing costs. I doubt another Kisto is hoving into view (and if it is then I sincerely hope Linn have someone left to turn off the lights)

A sad day for all (digital) 'source first' adopters. No more of these from Linn.

With the Majik DS, Akurate DS and Klimax DS being dropped from the range, will the Katalyst upgrade for existing owners of an ADS and KDS remain possible?

Yes upgrades available, but not ds to dsm

I don't know, but somehow I get the sneaking suspicion, that they named the new product wrong. AntiKlimax would have been a better fit after all the hush-hush and "revolutionary" claims...

Interesting. I’ll have another look later. There was nothing for mine when I looked mid afternoon.

Added- yes, there are beta updates for mine, but, so far, there’s nothing in the release notes to say what it does.

Thanks Anthony.

Also at the same prices? I don't expect them to become any cheaper though ;-)

Thinking ahead, it won't be worthwhile for KDS owners to wait for a KDS4 option anymore as it will only be KDSM from now on. I doubt that Linn is going to offer KDS owners this future upgrade opportunity.
So KDS3 with Katalyst will be the best single digital source and end station from Linn.

This implies also no Klimax Renew DS with Katalyst someday ...
