How many sources?

Post by lejonklou »

Hello everyone!

I would really appreciate your input on this. My question is:

How many sources do you currently have connected to your hifi system?
If you have several systems, answer for the best system you have.

Main system:

LP12SE
Ikemi
Pekin
Squeezebox Duet

If I end up getting further into streaming media (read Majik DS or better once there is better Mac/iTunes compatibility) then I could end up with two:

LP12SE

My setup is staggered: the KK is my main pre-amp. The CD12 and the left-front and right-front of an Exotik+DA go into that. The Exotik-input on the KK is set to fixed volume.

The Exotik services
- Squeezebox (S/PDIF)
- HD-DVD (Toslink)
- Tvix 6500 (S/PDIF)
- PVR (S/PDIF)
- TV (analog)

Works pretty well, except that you need to remember to manually lower the volume when switching from CD to something else...

Doesn't the Volume Offset on the Exotik work in this setup?

You should be able to use the volume offset on the Klimax Kontrol to bring these more into line.

How do you find the Squeezebox sounds run through the Exotik DAC?

I'll have a play with that. It might reduce the effect a bit.

It's mostly caused by the reasonably low default volume on both pre-amps. Which typically results in cranking up the volume on the Exotik when starting off with watching TV, then switching to CD and cranking up the volume on the KK, which has the side effect of cranking up the volume on the Exotik even more... Things can get a bit loud when you switch back to TV without lowering volume

Together with a music-minded (Sphinx, Mark Levinson & McIntosh-owning) friend I compared it to my Ikemi once. I didn't have the KK then, so both SB and Ikemi were connected to the Exotik (Ikemi to an analog input).

It's fairly decent, especially considering that it cost about €200. It's not as tuneful as the Ikemi was, but you'd have to pay attention to notice it. I found it surprisingly pleasant to listen to, enough so that I sometimes spent an hour just flipping through songs on the Squeezebox instead of bothering with the CDs.

Actually, that was my excuse to sell the Ikemi and buy the CD12. Now I most definitely dig out the discs for anything that involves listening with more than half an ear :P

That's quite a special system, JW!

Thanks everyone for your input so far!

I also posted this question on the Swedish Linn forum (http://forum.selleri.de) and currently 16% of the voters there have only one source connected.

At the moment it's 29% here.

It just happened to grow that way
The quality of the 2-channel sound is paramount for me, but I do enjoy a bit of surround for movies. If I hadn't already had the Exotik+DA, I'd probably would have searched for something with surround decoding abilities and a bunch of digital inputs. However, these are increasingly difficult to find, especially if you want one that's tuneful :?

I'm now saving up to do the back-end of the system, but I'll start a new thread to invite input on that :)

Sorry - no LINN source....

Post by Urs »

Looks like I'm the heretic outsider...

NAIM CD 555
Tuners: REVOX 260-s, Accuphase T-1000
Turntable: Revox "Empire" 291-S, with Benz cartridge & Phono-pre

going to modified Artikulates, or now Klimax 350 A,
(via NAIM NAP 552)

(two more tuners, TT , CD recorder and tape deck in small office system)

Urs

PS: yes, I'm a bit of an FM-Tuner addict....., hence I like good sources for everything

David,
I like the idea of an LP12javascript:emoticon!
Is this a new Linn digital vinyl player, with a typical Linn sounding name?

Don
Don, it's not digital, but it is vinyl! Currently working so well that I suspect the Ikemi (I just upgraded from Karik) will be switched off for weeks. Just had my Ekos 2 bearings and pillar replaced, still reeling from the improvement. I wouldn't have known anything was wrong, unless I'd heard my arm vs an Akito. Now I've got a freshly Linn refurbished Ekos, I'm wondering how incredibly good an SE must be to beat it.

Currently enjoying Ali & Toumani, previously Manassas. :D

Lejonklou, are you using the information from this poll to help determine if you should build a preamplifier with multiple inputs in the future :?:
