On the old clip you are almost perfect with the top of the speakers (slightly under). On the new clip you are above this angle. You can see the top of the speakers.

I think this can make a difference.

Try to make a clip like the old one just to make sure......
Same test, new clip.

Also still prefer old.

Now I had time to notice that the arm on the LP12 is parked so I suppose we’re listening to something digital...

Tempted to play the clips back several times to see if anything else is being switched in the rack...

I still prefer old - much more musical to my ears.

The first few seconds is enough with both sets of clips - the rest just confirms.

I remain just as curious as to what is going on.

I also prefer the old. The new seems to have more power at the low end but those beginning low guitar notes sound sour to me. The rest is better on the old as well. This is on the latest set of clips.

Aha! How? By cutting a link inside, taping the mains ground, moving the mains to a different block or something else?

Does the new modified PSU sound better in your room - are you keeping it.

Old still much better to my ears. I’m not convinced the ‘new ‘ is improving in terms of musicality.

The old sounds great- your Digital network is clearly well sorted.

Until you switch to the modified PS ! - at least on these clips.

There's a difference between the recordings that make the comparison difficult; old one is without reverb, later ones with reverb (room echo).

Trying to listen through this, I think "modified" is better.

Let me put it this way. If I was going to listen to the above song and I could only choose between the sound I get from the two clips I would listen to “old”.

If there has been changed something else in the room between the two clips that influence the sound the comparison is at best flawed or worse not valid.

I had another listen - and compared numerous times on my iPhone 6

I still prefer old - it sounds good with a natural flow and rhythm and had nothing to upset this.

The new modified psu clip does actually have a good flow, and with more emotion perhaps. But there is something very strange in the background that is really annoying for me.

It is as if the backing musicians are trying to add something of interest but they do not succeed and this upsets the whole song for me. I would rather they did not bother.

Very interesting - on my first quick listen I did not listen to see why i preferred old - usually the more enjoyable clip has the better flow and timing .

But here it appears to be something different that makes me prefer the old clip by quite some margin.

Yep, you might be right.

I think I'm voting Original as well.

I have recently listened to well recorded digital clips where the manufacturers modification to a ‘good’ streamer has also brought in the background musicians, but this time in a good way which significantly enhanced the song ( maybe as it was recorded?) The old clip sounded great but the new ‘modified’ one sounded even better,

So in this case, maybe there is more music to dig out from the recording but a different modification to the PSU could be the answer.

By the way - who is the artist , which song and which album? I would like to listen to the whole song/album.

I think you are right, I need to make a new clip of the "original" at the same time as the modified to make a valid comparison. Because in room I prefer the modified psu, even from the kitchen the music gets more of my attention than before.
We have just moved to this house and since the "original" we put a couple of paintings on the wall right behind the listening position that I think could disturb the recording.

I have a few things more to test.

Rosanne Cash - The list
The song is: Long Black Veil

Thanks

Listening to it now on Qobuz - great album and fantastic song.

This is one of the other benefits of Beck’s playground thread - being introduced to excellent artists, most of whom I have never heard of before.
