I'm in-between Charlie & Scooter: I think revised sounds a bit better with a better flow overall, but the vocals have lost something - they sound recessed & a bit mumbled. (unless that's what Leonard Cohen is meant to sound like?)

The volume is dropped on the new clip which doesn't help. Also slightly further back.

Isn't that the same as recessed? ;) :D

Henri Linear Power Supply vs Netgear SMPS

Post by Spannko »

Let’s see what you all prefer this time! Henri (the first and slightly shorter recording) or the Netgear powering a GS108T.

🤞🙏👍👎?

PS I’ve deliberately recorded these at 6pm (when the mains is pretty grotty) because linear power supplies generally don’t cope as well as smps with noisy mains.

I see the title but it is not giving me anything to play.

I feel 2 of 2 (1:08pm) is more convincing, although I struggled with the low volume (not sure if that's me or the clips)

Definitely the second one (Netgear powered 1:54 recording length). Syncopations are much clearer, it’s fun to listen to, and the choral part serves the song instead of just being another layer of sound. I was surprised by how much musically significant difference there is between the two.

Spannko, I never know which video is which when you use iCloud but preferred the one time stamped 6.08

Yes, clip number 2 is easily better. A rhythmic track with rhythm, who'd a thunk it!

Adjusted suspension:

Better or worse?
although I think with adjusted suspension it sounds a little bit better but its not perfect - maybe at the same time you changed something else without being aware ... like the platter is not at the right clocking position

It might be so, I haven't clocked the platter with the new inner platter yet.
I also need to compare the different sides and directions one the new belt vs the old belt.

Even though there's more to be done I already enjoying it more than with the Cirkus bearing.

Really difficult for me. They are very close really so congrats for achieving that.

1 is softer / more delicate. 2 is punchier. I think 2 is probably better. The bass seems more tuneful.

They seem better recordings. Was todays with a phone and yesterday mic / tripod? Or am I just hearing things that aren’t there

Is that a dog toy/chew on the floor, Spannko? If so, where (& what) is/are the 'woofer/s'?

Oh, yeah, the clips: I prefer 1 this time - feels like there's more to the guitar, and better interplay between the musicians. I agree with Charlie1 that "2 is punchier", but it just seems focused on the timing rather than the music.

I'm with the consensus here. Clip 2 appears a bit clearer and more dynamic but I find Clip 1 more enjoyable and it gets my body moving more. They do both sound pretty good overall.

edit: OK, I read the others too quickly. There wasn't a consensus. Charlie1 likes Clip 2 and tokenbrit likes Clip 1. So it is more correct to say that I am with tokenbrit and tpetsch in finding Clip 1 to be the more musical.

I guess its just me but No. 1 is more in tune, the whole performance is more together.

The new clip makes the first one sound a bit 'matter of fact'. It's a subtle thing but no doubt quite important to you in the room.

Well spotted tokenbrit! We’ve got two woofers with us at the moment. Nala, a cocker spaniel and her daughter Jude, who is a 4 month old cocker/springer cross. The pups are given thematic names, so all of Nala’s pups were named after England football players, and Jude’s dad, Prince George, was one of a royal family litter. Jude will stay with us for 12 months before going off to be trained as a police sniffer dog, whilst Nala lives with us permanently.

Re the power supplies. Who needs timing, eh? It’s so overrated!
