Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
👍
With my preferred setup I am now listening to Jean M. Jarre’s Oxygene on cd re-recorded in 2007 in HD 24 bits/96khz.
It sounds like analog in my setup now! Wow. 😃

I have to vote for B as well. I didn't hear the earlier versions and I don't know what I am comparing now but B is more enjoyable to me.

Thank you all for B’ ing me. :-)
What B has that may not get through well is a slightly hollow sound (sceletal). A makes me forget I am not listening to my Sondek!
Now you can all B right but I do put my enjoyment higher. :-)
P.S. Tried with a new set of clips and the differences were the same as in the above clips.
Just for fun: Link removed

Listening some more I think you can say that I with A get some of the same kind of distortion that I would expect to hear from a PA system.
Now that cannot be good? Well, it is right up my alley!
Once again it becomes totally clear that I am no audiophile. :-)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
May have found a better pair of Kan 1s in Teak. Picked them up today - 1 lady owner from new.
Both clips below are late model with B110 SP1057 bass unit - same as in Kan II:
Black Ash (34,2XX): https://www.dropbox.com/s/91hjgims32rco ... D.MOV?dl=0
Teak (33,1XX): https://www.dropbox.com/s/xbt3twt1e0hzx ... D.MOV?dl=0
Don't think they've been used for a few months so the teak pair may need loosening up a bit.
What do folks reckon?
In the long term, I still suspect the middle iteration with Linn tweeter and SP1003 bass unit will be be my preference but need to find a better pair than mine. Most of the battle is getting decent pairs that have been looked after, not been f#cked about with, and not been in too much sun or damp, etc.

Cool - I was thinking the same gents :)
Modern digital recordings are often not the greatest on vintage Kan system but it's a good song:

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Teak is better, but what causes them to sound so different? Could it be different torque values, dusty tweeters or dry and stiff rubber surrounds?
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I don't know. The grills had been removed (or glue perished) from the Ash pair but everything looks fine to me - proper drive units as far as I can see.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Always preferred teak isobariks, having heard several black and many afromosia.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Very interesting anthony. Something with the properties of the wood used maybe? Stiff and light?

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Teak is more colorful than black! ;-)
Since the wood is just a veneer, it would be hard to imagine it having much effect on the sound. Not impossible but... I do prefer the teak but who knows how many differences there could be besides the wood finish. One of the guys in the store said "Who cares, everybody knows the rosewood were the only good ones anyway!" :-)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I have to say that with the findings on this forum I find it very likely that the veneer can make a difference.
Charlie1’s clip shows by a fair margin the best Kan’s he has had to date and with anthony’s voice in mind maybe we should all go hunting teak speakers! :-)
And the ATVM95c is such a bargain.
On a side note I have just found out that there is an important difference in sound from my system between the two situations where the power buttons are compressed or decompressed on my lingo/linto (not connected to power). I guess the spring inside these buttons has a say in this!

Thanks V.A.MKD
Worked out why the Black Pumas sounded a bit sqwarky - the new Kans seems to expose or highlight this when the 12 is combined with the new 160 in extruded case. That LP is much better with NAC 12 and bolt down 160.
Nait avoids this sound too - nice bit of sax:

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I’ll cast my vote on teak.
As others have alluded to we should probably not draw conclusions beyond these two pairs of speakers, as there are multiple variables other than veneer.
Been a while since I listened to any clips, summer tends to be a down period for sound system focus...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
What happens to crossovers after many years (30 or more in the case of the Kans) and thousands of hours of playback? ..and let's say the teak ones been used way less compared to the black.
I would say the same goes for tweeters and woofers with the voice coils and ferro fluids etc. after many years and perhaps been played very loud. Like anything mechanical there should be some kind of wear happening and maybe materials aging? Yes. This is me rambling because I know very little about this subject.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Based on conversation with the owner, I think they've been in use all that time with speaker cable built into the walls. She was very fond of them but moving home and think wanted to start again (with Naim muso - not sure what speakers).
I was told direct sunlight on the drive units or damp conditions would more likely impact performance.
My older Teak pair had been in storage for a while.

Two quite different setups including two different lk100. Which do you prefer?
