Before we go to the results ,let's talk about the band.
The music is a Crusaders track ,you might not be familiar with their music, but no matter your preferred genre you will have heard or have some of these musicians in your collection.
Joe Sample
Larry Carlton
Wayne Henderson
Stix Hooper
Wilton Felder.

For me the stars of the show are,

The guitarist Larry Carlton.Yes that Kid Charlemagne solo

https://youtu.be/B_OXtCTHXig

Wilton Felder, although a saxophonist he also played bass from time to time,as he does on this track and album.

His debut album was the Bullit soundtrack which was produced by Wayne Henderson the trombonist in the band.

Wilton Felder played bass on

J5's ABC
Marving Gay's Let's get it on
Joni Mitchells For the roses,Court and Spark and THOTSL
Joan Baez,Diamonds and Rust
Jackson Browne ,For Everyman
Steely Dan Pretzel Logic
Jon Cale,Paris 1919
Michael Frank's Art of Tea (for you Fredrik)
.and many more.

RELAXIN' .....KAIRN LINTO LINGO1

COOKIN'........ KAIRN LINGO1 LINTO

STEAMIN'.........KAIRN LINTO LINGO1 PLUGGED INTO WALL SOCKET

WORKIN'.........LINTO KAIRN LINGO1

Obviously I'll need to try the 2 iterations with the LINGO1 leading.

Many thanks peeps.

Thank you Lego! Very interesting.

What appears to be missing is the order that some on this forum have preferred in the past:

Lingo - Linto - Kairn

And compare that to Cookin's

Kairn - Lingo - Linto

In other words, pre amp first versus source first in the strip. (Those are in my opinion the only two choices worth comparing).

Indeed an interesting comparison. I'm not particularly surprised at the outcome. In my system SMs first, then Radikal, and on down the line.

What I find really remarkable is how big the differences are and how easy it is to hear them on clips recorded with a phone.

Clips of two different loudspeakers:
'Hmmm, well, I'm not entirely sure but I think I prefer one of them. How do you rate them when listening in the room?'

Clips of two power cords swapping positions in the strip:
'That was easy. One is great and the other terrible!'

Thank you Lego! I've already established my preference for preamp first. I did that when I still had a Urika. On your clips I ranked Kairn-Lingo-Linto first, and Kairn-Linto-Lingo last. Accordingly I've swapped my Entity-Radikal for Radikal-Entity. Nice!

I’ve decided to have a go at building a pair of speakers. I thought the first step would be to determine if drive units have an “innate musicality”, and if so, what is the magnitude of the differences.

So, here’s a couple of videos comparing a couple of woofers I just happen to have (ie they haven’t been chosen as candidates for the final build).

It’ll be interesting to see what differences you all hear in the clips.

Enjoy!

Oh, yeah. Radikal, phono stage is definitely the order after the preamp.

Here’s another couple of woofer clips. Same bass units, but this time filtered at 90Hz instead of 2000Hz.

One of the woofers is about 120mm dia, the other about 200mm dia (that’s about 4 1/2” and 8” for our imperial friends)

Both drive aren’t new, they are well and truly worn in! What do you think of them as is? Particularly the differences between the two units when reproducing different bandwidths. I find the differences interesting, but I’m not too sure what can be made of them tbh.

The first sounds like it's drunk after a large intake of neat absinthe. The second sounds mildly drunk. Are you sure your "laboratory" set up is giving the woofers a chance Spannko?

200mm would have to have some crossover help and some careful cabinet loading to help speed that driver up subjectively. What happens if you run two 120mm's in its place?
